Deep Blue LP - Finished 08/29/12 with last test video link

How much alignment do any of you think needs to be done before I bolt that neck and body together?  The neck pocket is super tight, and I plan to leave the neck wood bare (but finish the headstock face).  I realize the nut is a different story, but...opinions?

Push the neck in the pocket, screw it down.  Make sure you use the shorter screws on the nut end.
Don't forget to wax your screws first.

Thanks for the tip, Autobat, I used candle wax on the screws.  It's bolted together now.  I'm going to stare at it until I finish it.  Please excuse the cobwebs by my Epiphone Dot on the ceiling.  :P

Perfect! I love it. And cool to see a photo of the makore back. I've only seen pictures from Warmoth's website. Looks great!

Looks great, but why the mismatch on the binding colors?  :icon_scratch:

It's a showcase neck and body.  A custom made version of that rosewood neck would have cost me a lot more than I had a budget for.  The match is close enough for me.  :glasses10:  :party07:

Can anyone recommend a drill bit size and type for the pickup mounting bracket holes and tuning machine small screw holes?

New parts, new parts!  Both arrived today.  I got the TP-6 from a vendor on ebay for $94 (free shipping)...beat that one, Musician's Friend.  :P

The pickup is a vintage Gibson Dirty Fingers, only I'm going with the zebra look.  This will be the bridge (Dirty Fingers should never EVER be used in the neck position imo, too much mud), and the neck pickup will be a 'Duncan SH-1, also zebra, white coils facing outward.  :toothy12:

Zion:  Thanks man.  The pictures of the Makore actually blurred, I'm going to take some better shots when I have time.

Just a tiny update to my journal here, I've ordered everything but the tone/volume knobs, and I'm closing in on a decision about that.

In the end I will have built a guitar that a certain G-thing-that-thinks-they're-all-that corporation sells for around $4300, for $1600, only with a bolt on neck (who cares :P) instead of a set neck.  Hah!

But more importantly, I will have nothing less than exactly what I want.

In short, as soon as the items come in, and I can kind of begin to lay them out on the body to give you an idea of what it's all going to look like, I'll post the photos, very soon!

More pictures as stuff arrives.

I've hit a snag.  See pictures and comments below.  I put this up in another part of the forums, doubling it up here just in case someone sees it that can recommend anything.

General view of the guitar with the TP-6, Schaller bridge and Dirty Fingers pickup in place.

As you can see, the Schaller bridge studs are too small for the 11mm holes that were drilled in the body.  I didn't consider that there were different TOM stud and adjustment riser sizes.  There's a 'Nashville' size TOM bridge, and an 'import' size too.

The stud size I need is 11 mm.  But I need the adjustable risers to have a smaller 3.96mm top to fit the Schaller bridge (most tune o matics with 11mm studs have 6.5mm tops on the adjustable risers).  Is this combination even possible?

Here are the specs on the Schaller bridge.

Just trying to figure something out without modifying the body in any way.

Here are all the Tune O Matic bridges.

At a glance, doesn't look like parts from any of these bridges are going to make the Schaller bridge work.  :(

Apart from asking Stew-Mac for my money back and just buying a TOM, I'm open to suggestions.

:icon_scratch:  Wouldn't you have to match the bridge / studs / inserts to what the body was ordered as  :dontknow:

What TOM routing did you order ?

I get Warmoth to install mine .... because I wouldn't know where to start  :toothy11:

Sorry someone else might have a better answer

BTW ... great looking guitar  :icon_thumright:

Mistake wasn't really with the body, it was with assuming the Schaller would be the same, and that all TOM bridges are the same size.

And thank you, I look forward to getting it singing soon.

Got my Duncan SH-1 today, perfect for the neck position, and to balance against the Dirty Fingers.

Tried to take some better pictures of the Makore.

Does anyone know how easily the Seymour Duncan logo can be scratched off without visibly ruining the surface of the pickup?  I know that may seem really petty, but...looking for a balanced appearance here with the pickups.  :icon_jokercolor:

Those coil forms are kinda soft - I doubt any kind of "scratching" is going to leave it unmarked. I'd try some mineral spirits or naptha first, and if those didn't work I'd whip out the benzene or acetone. Careful with those, though. Might melt the plastic. See if you can get to a spot you won't see later in order to test it in case that happens.

Thanks, Cagey.

I forgot to say, the picture of the freaking pickup on ebay didn't have the logo on it.  Note to self:  next time verify photo with seller if appearance matters.  :dontknow: :laughing7:

Maybe just as well. At least you know it's a Seymour Duncan and not some Chinese knockoff somebody liberated from a raggedy old Hondo.
