Darken Cocobolo to Match Indian Rosewood

I want to darken the Cocobolo pickup covers to look more like the color of my Indian Rosewood fretboard. Do any of you have any experience in doing this? I saw some tone and volume knobs online that had been coated with several coats of linseed oil. They were close enough to work for me but I wanted to check here to see if linseed oil would really work to darken the covers.

Try just wiping them with alcohol or naphtha to see what that does. Some woods darken more than others even with a water-clear coating on them, and the solvents will just evaporate without hurting anything.

Rubbed denatured alcohol on one and I think this will work :icon_scratch: I just need to use satin gloss poly to match the look of the fretboard better :icon_thumright: Cagey  :yourock:

For as much trouble as making those covers can be, I think I'd still find some scrap Cocobolo to use as test pieces and finish that first before committing.

That is a good idea. I have 21 inches left from the original piece from Woodcrafters.

That's a good-sized chunk, and I know they don't give that stuff away. Just find some cut-offs you can play with. Doesn't need to be anything sizable or that you'd save/use otherwise. You're just trying to find out what your projected end finish is gonna look like.

So right about not giving that stuff away. I'm only going to use about 2" of the left over piece :icon_thumright:
