So I come into school last week and the music teacher tells me that my Mesa combo wasn't turning on. I figured it was a blown fuse so I went to the guitar shop, got a fuse, brought it back, put it in and turned the amp on....on standby. The lights came on. Cool. I let it warm up a minute or 2, flicked the switch from Standby and heard a "POP" and all the lights went off. So, I figured it might be time for a tube change. Tubes are good about a year or 2. These have been in there about 6 or 7. hehe!! So, I go home, grab 2 tubes out of my Mesa head and bring them in this morning.....along with another fuse. Put everything in, turn it on, wait, flip it off of standby and it immediately blew out again. That can only mean that there's something wrong inside. Now I gotta send it out for repair. God only knows how much this is going to cost.

You've got a short either in the B+ supply, or the Bias supply, or a bad tube.

To narrow it down, either:

1 - get a bunch of fuses take out all the tubes and plug them back in one at a time until your fuse pops.  If it pops right away, then there is either a shorted filter cap, or an obvious short in another spot

2 - get a multi-meter and track it down.  Make sure it's not plugged in, and the caps are discharged.  then go over the amp until you find the short.  It should be pretty obvious.

or you could just take it into a shop.  Either way, very repairable by someone who knows what they are doing.

BTW - when you changed the tubes, did you replace just the output tubes, or the preamp tubes as well?  If you did them all, then my money's on a cap.

You left a Mesa Boogie at school? And, it was working when you left it, and then "the music teacher tells me that my Mesa combo wasn't turning on..." Who's paying for the repair? I mean, how many people were playing through it, and what did they DO to it... jeez, I wouldn't even leave a Peavey or Crate just lying around. :icon_scratch:

It's in Japan.  Probably much different than leaving it at an inner city American school.  They actually take care of things.  Hell, they don't even where shoes in the house!

Word. These kids take care of things. No one touches it without asking me first. The only reason they were messing with it that day was because the music teacher got a new PA in the auditorium and they were wanting to test it out. I have no worries whatsoever leaving my amp here for the boys to use if they want to. As for who's paying for it, ultimately, it's not the school's fault and I've told them that, but they insist on paying for it. I'm going to decline that offer though because if they pay for the repair *THEN* I will feel obligated. I'm sure no one did anything to it. I've had it for at least 6 years and those tubes were in it when I got it. I had no idea about tube life being a year or 2. I thought you just used them until they died. Amps aren't my area. hehe!!

Actually, the boys hardly ever touch it unless they're doing a performance. I told them they can use it anytime they like but they get all nervous and tell me they're afraid to mess with it.

I've known several people that had similar problems with their Mesas.

I'm sure it happens with every company and isn't just a Mesa problem. I've had this amp for at least 6 or 7 years and this is the first quirk it's given me. I've also taken a tour of the Mesa plant and can tell you that they are meticulous with their work.

Hey Mully, completely off-topic (and I dont mean to hijack your thread), but seeing as how you live in Japan...

Have you ever seen a ESP 'Edwards'?

I consider myself kind of a ESP afficiando (but its not like Ive memorized their product lines), I came across
one on Ebay and thought it was badASS. They seem like high-end custom shop stuff, so I don't know why they
just dont call em ESP's??

This is the one I came across, originally he had it posted for $899.00

Sure, I see Edwards all the time. They are actually the lower end models of the Navigator series. They are really nice for an affordable guitar. I don't think you'll find anything of their quality at that price......unless it's a Warmoth of course. hehe!! But yeah, I see them. You looking to get one?

Hey, and this is for everyone here, if you're looking for something that is only available in Japan let me know. I'm more than glad to help. As long as you pay for the item and shipping I have no problems doing the leg work for you.

Here's the deal, when you're ready to jump in for the Axis EX, drop me a line and let me know what color and what condition you are looking for. Once I know that I will start scouring auctions and shops to see what is available. Once I find something I will send you a link to whatever page it is and explain to you what is written on the page. The price for it will be right there for you to see too. If you're good to go you can Paypal me the cabbage and I'll grab it and send it to you.

I fully understand how dangerous it is sending money to a stranger over the internet but, you can take my word for it, I'm not a crook. I'll give you all the information on myself that you need to feel comfortable with.

One other thing. Once I get the guitar here I will open the package and inspect it to make sure everything is ok. I will take hi-res photos from multiple angles and close up for you to see that there is no damage on my end. I will then pack it up, minus the strings so there is no tension on the headstock. The cargo bin of an airplane is freezing cold and with all that tension on the neck, and with the boxes being tossed around, it's very easy for the head to snap right off, so, no strings will be on it. Now, once it reaches you I will hope that you inspect it and see that it is what you wanted. If there is any damage that isn't in the photos I will hold zero responsibility for it. My sole intention is to be helpful to a fellow guitar lover. I will not be making any money off of the deal so I'm just a middle man. No more, no less. Oh, but I will definitely insure it for more than the buying price when I ship it so if anything is messed up you'll need to work it out with the post office.

I've done this 3 or 4 times before, and have had a few guitars sent to me too, and have never had a problem so I'm not trying to scare you with the shipping talk. Just making it clear that I hold zero responsibility for any damage that could occur during shipping. I'll make sure it's packed really well so if anything does happen you'll know it's the post office's fault.

Here's a link to Yahoo Auction here in Japan. This is what comes up with the serach of "Music Man". Take a look around. You'll get a rough idea of prices.

Anything can go wrong with anyone at anytime, but based on Mully's standup input over the past year or so on this forum, I'd feel pretty safe dealing with him on a guitar.

In the end a forum is a community, just like the community where you buy your bread, eggs, cheese and butter.  You get to know the people around you by doing business with them.  We're simply an online community.

Mully has always seemed very interested in helping people out, whether its on this forum, or the kids at the school where he teaches.  :occasion14:

Absolutely.  Top end and top boost?

Seriously, my brother played that one at Spaceman, and he said it easily blew away the AC30.

How about filling a niche.  There are lots of low powered amps coming out right now that seem to be really popular.  Then there are the mid power amps like a Deluxe Reverb or an AC30.  Not that they are mid power per se, but its less than a full on Marshall stack.

I've been lookin at something like a Fender Princeton, a little bit bigger than a Champ, but a little bit smaller than a Deluxe.

You are probably set up to make more like you made previously, but I'd like to see something smaller that I could crank without making my ears bleed.

You can sell them in Canada, I'll sell them in the US, and Mully can sell them in Japan.
