Just what it says..
The main W site is horrendously painful on mobile browsers. It basically unrolls EVERY menu item on the site into one big honking 1.1MB page and that's before images load.

I'm more likely to make purchases from my mobile if I can help it, because it isn't tied to location, if you get my drift. ;)

If you click on a page, the content you're looking for occurs at the very end, after all that other stuff has loaded.

I had the same trouble until I got a new phone. Get an android os phone if you can. It makes a big difference. The phone I had previously was the Samsung Jack running Windows 6.5, and it sucked trying to use the internet. But the old Warmoth worked pretty pretty good on that phone with Opera 10 browser.

I got a new phone, Motorola Atrix 4G android 2.3 Gingerbread platform with a dual core processor, and now getting on the net on my phone is like sitting at my desktop...

I actually find it to be very friendly but what browser I choose makes a difference. (I use Android phones/tabs)

This is something that is being looked at and researched.  There's a fair amount of coding and redesign necessary to make things flow on mobile devices.  Given that mobile browsers only account for @5% of overall site traffic, it isn't the #1 priority but we do realize more and more people are moving in that direction.
