Color scheme question - Body decided, Now for the Neck (near bottom of page 2)

I'm currently conceptualizing a Strat build inspired by the Adrian Smith Jackson Strat.  But, with all the customization options Warmoth has to offer, I can't just go with a painted white body.  :laughing7:  Besides, I already have a white Strat.

That said, it will be an alder body with a quilt maple top finished in black dye.  It will have black binding and the hardware and pickups are black.  I'm trying to come up with a color for the back of the body.  I don't want clear and I don't want black.  Black would otherwise be OK, if there was no black binding.

Fdesalvo posted up a Velocity, I believe, planning on a white back.  I thought that was pretty cool, Olympic White, specifically.  Any other thoughts?  Grey or silver metallic?  Ideas?

If it helps, it will be a maple neck, Warhead.  I'm undecided on ebony vs. maple fingerboard, but I'm leaning towards ebony.  Inlays will either be dots or sharkfins, also not sure yet.

Thanks in advance.  :glasses9:

Alder is a somewhat non-descript white-ish wood, so I can understand not wanting a clear finish, but there's a difference between clear and transparent. You could just tint it. A vintage tint back or transparent brown would/could match up nicely with Maple or roasted Maple neck meat, regardless of the fretboard species. If it was roasted Maple with an Ebony 'board, the whole thing would be raw so it would look and feel fantastic.

Also, I know you already have a white Strat, but there's white, and then there's pearl white. Warmoth's pearl finishes are spectacular. The pictures don't do them justice at all. You could forgo the quilted top and do the whole thing in pearl white with black binding, and you'd be one happy camper. The money you save on the quilted top could go to a AAA curly Maple neck.

I like Cagey's idea. Black top with a Black ebony fretboard and Roasted maple neck with vintage tint back body would match real nice. That could look sharp! Although pearl ain't to shabby either. In any event I can't wait to see the outcome!

Someone did an India Ink body recently, and it looked really hot. Would you consider that?

Edit: It appears that the images have been removed. You can still find a few low res images cached on Google Images.

Thanks for the ideas, guys, but I'm pretty set on the front of the guitar.  I'm guessing no one likes the white back with the black dyed quilt front.  I'll figure something out for the back.  Thanks.

I guess I miss read what you said. I like the idea of the white back with washed black top. I thought you were saying you weren't going to do the white back... :dontknow:

White back with masked binding might be cool.  Black back with masked binding would be my own preference, but the white would still look pretty effin' cool.

I thought images might be helpful.  As I mentioned, the build is inspired by the Adrian Smith Jackson Strat, which itself is basically a spin-off of the '80s Charvel San Dimas Strats, to include a pick-guard and non-recessed Floyd.  Also, the "theme" of the guitar, if you can call it that, is "Stranger in a Strange Land," named for one of the Maiden songs off of the "Somewhere in Time" album.  The song was written by Smith; Harris has written the vast majority of their songs.

The Unique Choice quilt maple top I chose is a bit off from the usual quilting.  Using the builder, I thought the way the grain comes out with the black dye treatment looks really cool.

If I did a black back, I would do the "clean line" option, but I really like the look of the black binding on the Warmoth builder image.  A black back might make the binding superfluous.  I don't want the clear back in case there is one of those random green streaks that can be found in alder.  So, I'm thinking either a white back, charcoal frost, inca silver, or possibly even silver flake.

Again the neck will be Warhead made of quartersawn maple.  I'm still undecided on a quartersawn maple fretboard with either black mother of pearl dots or black sharkfins, or a black ebony neck with black mother of pearl dots.  This is why I asked about the black MOP dots on an ebony fretboard in another thread.

"Stranger in a Strange Land":

@DangerousR6:  Sorry man, I'm not writing clearly, again.  :laughing7:

@Bagman:  I tried the masked binding, but I liked the black better.    If I did the black back, I'd go the clean-line option.  But I really like the black binding.  :icon_thumright:

Except for the White Pearl, I think any of them would look outstanding. Even the white pearl wouldn't be bad, just a little too contrasting, perhaps.

Thanks for the replies, Adked and Rgand.  So far, two votes (Rgand and Stratamania) for Inca Silver.  I think it would look ok, as well.  Does anyone like Charcoal Frost or even the Silver Flake?

I kind of like Silver Flake for the Stranger in a Strange Land motif, but I'm afraid it might be too dominant over the dyed quilt front.

Not a fan of flaked finishes. You see one and you start hallucinating calliope music, cotton candy, clowns and merry-go-rounds. Stranger in a strange land? Maybe. On acid.

Hilarious. I'll never think of flake finishes the same.

LOL..I guess that would qualify as too dominant!  :icon_jokercolor:

So, Inca Silver is in the lead.  Any takers for Charcoal Frost?

The charcoal frost would look classy and a bit more restrained but I say go for the inca silver, you'd still get the strong contrast effect but match up better with the greyish highlights in the top. Should make for a very cool looking guitar.

I'm not sure you'd notice the black binding much - apart from the sharper edges - I'd be inclined to save a little cash and just go with the clean line.

Do we know that Warmoth will definitely do a dye and metallic combo like this?
