Coiled cable storage

I was wondering how to properly store a coiled cable. I'm thinking of buying a couple of coiled cables for a fatter tone. I'm currently using straight cables, and I use the over-under wrapping technique, and but rubber bands around them between gigs. I can get very anal about how I store my gear to keep it (even the cables) in near-pristine condition. As I was considering the cables and prices, it hit me that I don't know how to store them properly.

for clarification, this is everything I do to store straight cables: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLwwB29uQRg

i remember my video production teacher telling us to do this with all the overly expensive tv cables we used in the studio. i forgot after i graduated. cool video

There's a reason coiled cords are evil. Much warmer/fatter/brighter/duller is debatable, but coiled cords just roll off high end. It can be accomplished with the knob on your guitar no one ever uses.

I've got one of these by Vox and I love it:

haven't noticed any tone difference. The main reason I love it is that it never gets tangled or wound up because of turning around. I find that with a straight cable I'm always untwisting it.

That video is correct. That's how I do it, and yes, you can throw the cord straight out, no sweat.  :icon_thumright:

Just make sure that the rollers on your amp speaker box have the brake applied before you hit full tension on the coiled cable  ---- a bass playing friend of mine had to stop mid performance to stop a runaway quadbox coming straight at him!

hehe good advice - I'd probably use a really nice straight cable for performing. But for in my "studio" (I use that term very loosely) my coiled cable is far easier to deal with.

Now that Coily-cable tone is available in a stomp box:

(It's a joke, although it did fetch ~$25 on ebay. )
