These are worth a read if you don't think that everything cool has already been invented. I doubt anybody's got one but I'd love to hear about it if you do.

One can actually get most of all the same pickup combinations with a On-On-On mini switch assigned to each pickup together with a double wafer super switch.  Only problem is remembering all the swtich settings.

Well, the parametric EQ inside of a guitar sounds neat-o, as long as you're building an active guitar - but there are some of those on basses. They've got some good combinations of other people's ideas, but seemingly, nothing patentable. I think the Washington Post's article was more "gee look at the cute college kids" than anything that's going to change the world.

Nah... he's trying to create a need/niche where there is none needed.

But musicians are a lot more traditional, and skeptical, than one might think, said Michael Molenda, editor in chief of Guitar Player. "There's been no real good new designs since 1950," Hogue said. "Rock-and-roll was born on those instruments."

Agreed.  Why fix it if it ain't broke?  Sometimes you get it right the first time.

I've never been one to need the latest and greatest for guitars/amps/etc... (primarily because I think most new stuff either sucks tone-wise or is just a gimmick).  Besides, more "toys" ain't gonna help you get better on the guitar or write songs better - one should always stick to the basics and keep focus.

Much of it sounds similar to the Acme ToneStyler.  http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/ToneShaper_for_Stratocaster__P2032C218.cfm

We've got one here at the office and it has made the rounds for people to check out.  It actually works quite well.
