Clear lacquer over stained wood?

On the body shown I want to clear lacquer the whole body. Top is lacquer and bottom is bare wood that I want to stain or use Stew Mac Color Tone on before the clear. I'm thinking now that I should have prepped the entire body first before painting the top. Too late now. Am I correct about this? Filler, Stain, Sealer, then Clear lacquer.

You are fine right where you are at. I would tape off the front using a low tack tape and  masking paper. Do your prep and finish on the back being careful not to let your color soak into the paper on the front.

A note about the tape: I do not leave tape and paper on a newly paint surface over night, so if you cannot complete all the steps on the back pull the paper and tape and then redo it before the next step on the back.
I have found that the tape will mess up a finish if it is left on to long. Finally, when you pull the tape for the final time wipe the surface with benzene to remove any residue from the surface that is left from the tape.

It will probably take me a week to prep for clear nitro. I think I could probably get the top covered with paper by just masking it on the binding only possibly. Longer to mask but wouldn't need to change it every day. Gonna give it a shot anyways.

Thanks Tonar. I got it masked off without any  of the tape touching the paint. It is onl touching the binding..

Naphtha will work fine. You're just removing glue/oil residue. Benzene is incredibly toxic; you don't want to use it if you don't have to. I'm surprised he recommended it.

Also, be careful about follow-up finishes. Binding is generally made of ABS plastic and will melt in the presence of too much acetone. Anything more than a 50/50 mix in your lacquer could be destructive to the material. Once you've got a coat or two on, you're fine.
