Cherry necks

I was looking into making a new bass neck for myself (moth fretboard) and came to cherry. I love the look, and the sound is supposed to be similar to maple, but a little less bright, which sounds perfect for me.

I know this is not a conventional neck wood so I was wondering if anyone has worked with it, and what to expect. I'm not sure what kind of finish to use, if I need one. I assume I'll need graphite rods to add some strength, as cherry is supposed to be about 75% of maples strength.

Also, fretboard suggestions? Alder body, cherry neck, and..? Just shooting for the most balanced overall sound.

I agree with Dangerous on this.

I own a Martin SWDGT (solid cherry back and sides) and it is one of the sweetest sounding acoustics I've ever played.
