Duncan uses something similar to that on the Twang Banger. BKP also had a whole write up about it because the Rabea Massaad signature single coils they just put out have the option for a base plate.

I have tried something similar out on a couple of pickups and it does add some low end content to the sound. Its great for making a strat bridge lose some of the ice pick.
 
I have the Fralin baseplate on my DG type Strat build. And yes it does, but its only about 50% there. I figuring the rest is surrounding that pup with a metal bridge.
The T type I need to finish is looking at the equation from the other side. Want a tele bridge and strat neck sound. From what I have heard, the Lollar Royal T Tele neck gets you 95% of the way there.

I purchased similar idea from the ZON. They work, but it isn't drastic, plus I grounded em.
