Changing a floyd nut to a normal nut

I have a neck that is cut for a floyd and I want to run a non-trem bridge.  I thought of just keep ing the floyd nut on and removing the locking units, it still should function properly.  Anyone converted a floyd to a regular nut?

Depending on the kind of guitar, I often use a wide bone nut blank and either bevel the back edge for relief, or simply glue another piece of wood on behind the nut for decoration to fill the gap. I keep it looking nice, of course.

Thanks what I was thinking.  The only issue is the neck is Canary so it would be tough to get it to match.

If you can't match it, make it obvious! Stain it black or something that will compliment the color of the hardware (or if the peghead is painted - match the paint).

Good idea

There used to be some nuts called Ebanol sold for this exact job. Perhaps you might be able to find one somewhere.

I've heard/read of them, but you can't find them even for the love of money. Not sure why. Spent about a half a day on it not too long ago. Saw a neck I wanted but it had been ruined with a Floyd nut installation, and wanted to find a way to get around it. No luck, unless I wanted to machine something myself. Auction ended before it occurred to me to talk to Doug about machining something appropriate. Next time, I'll know better.

And if you're reading this, Doug, you should design something like that up and offer it as a product. I'd bet real money you could sell a good pile of them for quite some time.

Yes, I have not seen an Ebanol available for some time.

While we are on the question of Floyd nut shelves. A while back there was a post but I can't find it where someone had ordered a showcase neck and had it cut for a Floyd nut, but it was protruding over the curve to the headstock. Does anyone know if that is the case with all showcase necks retro cut for a Floyd nut?

I suppose also a neck ordered to be built with a Floyd nut shelf would not feature such a protrusion.

It depends on the neck. Outside of instruments designed to have Floyds installed as standard equipment, few of them leave a lotta real estate up in the headstock area for anything other than the nut they were meant to host. Any guitar design older than the Floyd isn't likely to accommodate that monster nut without some compromise. Strats (or most straight headstock necks) often have extra wood on either side of the nut, but tilt-backs rarely do.

Hi Cagey, I meant specifically on Warmoth's necks from the showcase with nut options, versus those custom ordered for a Floyd shelf from the start.

So we could say Warmoth Strat necks.

Same observation applies. A tilt-back headstock often has its nut butted up to the end of the fretboard, and the tilt starts immediately behind it. You really can't move the nut, so in the case of the fatter Floyd version, it's going to overhang the slope on the headstock. You'd have to have a separate neck design for Floyds to avoid it.

All parts has the brand, but not the nut needed

Yes, this can happen if you specify a Floyd shelf on a showcase neck. The curve where the fretboard meets the headstock has already been cut, so the shelf is a scooch shorter, and the nut my overhang slightly. It's a cosmetic thing only, and not really that noticeable. The nut will mount and function just fine. If you order a custom neck with a Floyd shelf, the shelf is cut at the beginning, and the nut will not overhang.

Thanks, double A that clears it up exactly. I know its just cosmetic, but if I fit one its one of those little details that I like to be just so... looks like a custom neck would be the way for me to go if I fit a locking Floyd.

Cagey, I do know the nut needs to be where it is and the variations of potential construction, which is what was behind my question. But thanks as always for providing information.

Yep, I get it. The first Floyd neck I personally got from Warmoth was a showcase neck. Since then, they have all been custom-ordered. Partly for the shelf, and party because of all the other specs I am also super picky about.  :icon_thumright:
