Case for an SG

I'm getting a 1-3/4" thick SG with the Warmoth Pro Angled LP neck, a recessed Wilkinson tremolo, and a 25-1/2"/24 fret extension. (I don't think the fret extension would have any bearing, just thought I'd mention it in case it does somehow.) Anyone know if the Gator or SKB cases would fit this build?

For the money I'm putting into this guitar, there's no way I'm trusting a soft case. Hell, I should probably just hire a supermodel to carry it and an orchestra to announce its presence. :toothy12:

P.S.: First time post, so please be gentle. I searched first but didn't see anyone with this particular build.

the SKB should be fine, I always use the ones with the neck-strap thingy to hold it nicely in place, you can always use a bit of foam padding (or a pair of rolled up socks!) to pad the body and make sure it's snug to the case.

otherwise, checkout guitarfetish.com, they have some decent guitar cases as well.

SKB and Gator cases are made in Mexico and China, respectively, where all the best cases are made.

If it was me, I'd be all over one of these (also fabrique en Chine)...

I may have to check the Warmoth in my current SG case for fit, to see if it can handle the increased width and (possibly) different neck angles. The last thing I want is to warp the neck or something.

Yeah, they're heavier than your typical vinyl/pressboard hardshell. But, it's a real hard shell. You can terrorize these things and they don't care, while your fiddle stays in one usable piece. Lot to be said for that. Whoever's moving your gear isn't going to baby it like you do. Besides, what's 20 pounds? Add your fiddle and a few purse items and it'll be 30, but where are you going with it? It's not like you're going to have to carry it for miles on end. On/off the car/truck at home and at the gig. Man up! <grin>

That seems like a great price.  I did a quick search on the link and looks legit.  Are they really all that good?  Can't really get a decent wood case for that price.

The only cases I've ever seen that are better are the Anvil ATA units, which are designed to military specs. Touring pros use them because the airlines are incredibly abusive of their cargo. For a Strat case from them, you're looking at $450+, with adders on that for the options.

These CNB cases aren't ATA certified, but they're built along those lines and so are wicked tough. I suspect getting the actual certification is very expensive, kinda like getting a UL label, so they just don't bother. In any event, highly recommended. I have 12 of them now, and haven't had a single issue with any of them.

If I had any bitch at all, it's that there's no covered compartment next to the neck area for stashing things. There's walled-off space there, but it's not covered. So, the risk is that your wang bar/spare strings/strap/etc. could end up floating around in the case and maybe get to your body's finish. Hasn't happened to me yet, but I'm not a touring musician, either. The road is hell on gear.

Put your case candy in a drawstring bag with a strip of velcro on it and you're looking at a pretty cheap fix, but I agree that it's a P.I.T.A. to have to resort to such a fix.

If I find myself dragging any of these around much, that's what I'll do. Or, maybe I'll modify the case guts. In the meantime, it's not an issue for me. They're just for storage. Seems like overkill for that, but since they cost about what the cheap cases do, why not? You never know when you might want to drag things around the Planet of the Apes. Besides, they're nice and square so they stack well and don't fall over. Can't really say that about the traditional hardshells, SKBs or Gators.
