Carve Top #3

I've known Rhoney for some time, and more importantly, his wife(Who also builds these guitars)... His design is modified from a starcaster. The shape is different, and it's a flat top. It's been a long time coming but he and his customers seem VERY happy. He's tried some variations, cause he can. I believe he has modified his headstock as well to be alittle smaller, since those pics were taken, Stubby... Pron? Here:

There seems to be a starcaster phase right now. Bilt has one, Rhoney has one, Fano has one, Warmoth has one, and now there's talk of a Fender Japan reissue. I can understand the lust, it's a cool 335 for the Fender guys, and a great one for the indie hipsters who won't play any guitars that could perhaps be constrewn as normal. I'm definitely going to hold out for a reissue, unless these had thick enough walls and enough options to where I could modify it to a more original design(I like those too. :icon_tongue:). Speaking of phases, though, here's a bite for you. I think it's hilarious how long these things take. The guys on OSG were asking for telemasters years before the boom, when Warmoth and rutters and King and everyone else but Fender finally realised it. Now there's been demand for years, this boom was almost inevitable. Everyone but Fender(AGAIN) has their own Starcaster! I'm curious to see who else will jump on the bandwagon, and who will wave the flag with overpriced, VINTAGE CORRECT!!! parts. Speaking of which, I couldn't care less about going to a lot of trouble for a vintage correct starcaster. Not only were they crappy guitars, but they weren't all that pretty either. Still, if japan makes a reissue, it's almost sure to be good and hold better resale value than a bitser. I'm interested to see where this goes, even if I won't be murdering my great aunt to get the first one out the door.

Basses, though.... That's giving me ideas. I've got some thinking to do, I may need the potato peeler after all.

I'm wondering about wood & pickup routing options?

To me, nothing speaks volumes about the 1970s than a walnut guitar..... A walnut starcaster with white binding would only be topped by a  pair of platform shoes!

Moar Pikshurs! Back, sides... flatmount bridge will be an option right?

dear god tell me that you guys will make a bass option. I will have one ordered so quick!

A bass guitar option of this body would be fantastic..... Mudbucker, Tele Bass humbucker routs, J or P Bass routs, Musicman pickup routs, Mini humbucker rear routs..... Big fat Badass bridge stuck at the back...  :icon_thumright:

BTW, this body (and a bass guitar option) would have a rear cavity panel to get access to the pots right?  :-\

Not sure about Wide Range Hums. Not a very popular pickup plus I am not sure where to find pickup mounting rings for this size of pickup. I will check to see if they are going to be an option.

I got some mounting rings from Terrapin Guitar, but they wouldn't work on the current routes for the Teles.  The route that is currently available is a rectangle where some other ones appear to have ears for the rings.  The original rings have quite a wide area where the mounting screws go into the body.  I couldn't find anything but the original Starcaster ones that were like that.  Adding to that, the Starcaster is a carved top, so it gets a bit more difficult.  It'd be nice to get a drawing (or pdf) from the guys that make the rings to check if they would fit, but...

Oh yeah, I'd like to put in a vote for the WRHB routes as well.

here's news: word has it, they're trying to work out a short scale Starcaster bass...... ;)
I would be all over that build as I have been looking at hollow body short scales from Lakland.

While fiddling with this I realized that nobody really sells any kind of *tron in black. GFS Dream 180's is about the closest thing to that I could find.

it's just a mockup, based on the #1 picture on this thread and some image editing. but it reminds me....

My very first guitar as a teenager was a horrid strat with a horrid kahler knockoff. when it was time to look for my first real guitar, i found this green flamed maple Yamaha 335 12 string. I passed on it because i couldn't afford it (even though it was probably not a bad price). Funny because even though I'm a die hard strat guy, i still have a soft spot for 12 strings and hollow bodies. just not in the same guitar.
