Can I lubricate my pots?

Or do I just need to try different ones?
They're currently regular-length CTS and they're stiff, really stiff in one case. They're not rubbing anywhere externally.

Lubrication could help, but it's more likely that they've been put together too tightly.  Either way, you'll need to bend open the 4 tabs, open it up and see what's going on.

The more I think about it, I did have to push on the backs of them pretty hard for them to thread on the top (carved tele).  I probably bent the guts.  I'll open them up.

Any recommendations for a lube though?

Try cleaning them first, they may just be gummed up.

Some spray contact cleaner from Radio Shack should work.  Something like Deoxit D5.

There's several non-conductive, silicon based lubricants out there as well.  If the pots work fine and don't make scratching sounds or scrape when turned, I prefer them a little snug.  They stay where you put 'em better.

Get a can of ProGold from Mouser (www.mouser.com).

That will work, free up any dried greases, and not screw up the contacts.

If the tuner is still too stiff, then you gotta work it, because its a parts fit thing, not a stiff, dry ube thing.

Hey CB, is this the same stuff?  I checked the Mouser site, but only came up with Techspray.

Or is this it?

Thats the stuff.  They used to have deOxit and it was red, then progold was clear/amber.  It looks like they just changed the name because the can and packaging and graphics are all the same.  I've got several cases of it at work - we usually only get it once every few years.  I'm certain its the same.

This sounds like a really bad pick-up line... "Hey, wanna go to my place and lubricate my pots?"

Very true.  Always be a gentleman, and offer to go to HER place and lubricate HER pots.

Except if she's a bass player - that might lead to something.
