Can direct mount humbuckers be adjusted for height?

Fuhgeddaboudit. Those plastic anchors are much too long, depend on expansion to work, and will wear just as quickly and easily as wood. Anchoring isn't the problem. Simple wood screws will work fine if you don't abuse them. Wear is the problem. Do the inserts with machine screws to eliminate wear or take your chances with the wood.

Of course, if you end up removing and re-driving the screws enough to enlarge the hole  beyond the screw's ability to gain purchase, you can still install the threaded inserts later.
