Broken Fretboard

Under the heading "Things That Make You Cry in the Night", we've got a new entry. All these years I've resisted buying a fret press until just recently. Needed to take care of another problem that this solved nicely. However, I learned something I probably should have known in advance: you can create a lot more pressure on the fretboard than would be typical with a fret hammer. Because of that, you have to modulate yourself a bit, or this will happen to you...

Ouch!  :sad1: :o

Buuuut ...
Knowing this post comes from Cagey ... it will be interesting to see how it will get solved.

Man I hope it was your own neck, otherwise it must feel less than great.

It's probably one of those things that as you do it, you sort of know "oh s**t"...

It's a very clean break, so it should glue up nicely. Luckily for me (in a way), it's my neck instead of a customer's and it's the seldom used last fret. Still pisses me off, though.I'll probably have to buy another body with a 720 mod so the fretboard will lay against the body at the overhang and be somewhat supported.

I'm sure you can solve it. The binding I guess you could carefully blend with som acetone or worse case replace it.

What worries me is that the break looks to be just at a fret (which is logical since the fretboard would be weaker there). Not sure, even if it glues nicely, how it is going to hold up to the pressure from seating the fret. I'd probably remove quite a bit from the barbs and glue that fret in.

That is the first thing I said to myself when I saw the pic...

and that the second.  :icon_jokercolor:

Sorry for the mishap! I'm sure you'll might it right (just share the process with us here...)

oops!!

Well - that's a lesson for us all.  Please post when you have it glued up.  I'd like to see the result!!

Trevor

That looks like it will glue nicely.

I had same feeling when I tried to slightly reduce the size of the wolfgang build I did and realized my blade was not set to 90 degrees.  Big mess that was too much to sand....so I glided it back on.

Fixed that for you.

Also: seldom used fret? No way. The "money" may all be made in the first five frets....but the GLORY only happens from 20 up.  :guitarplayer2:

p.s.: sorry about your, um, learning opportunity. A good cry can be very cathartic.

"learning opportunity" Hehe! Yeah, that's the ticket. It's a learning opportunity! It's custom-made!

That is priceless!
I'll use that as my signature - if it's ok

LOL...thanks. Feel free to quote me. I do write for a living, so it's nice to know I can come up with something glib every now and then.  :cool01:

You mean there is more lurking that far up the street? Huh, I'll have to take a wander up that way sometime.  :laughing7:

I only play on fret 21. I just stick a capo there and strum. I've written many hit songs, and chicks dig it.  :icon_jokercolor:
