Brian May talks about making the Fireplace from scratch

I can't believe it's not insured.

Insurance usually only pays back fair market value, and home-made guitars generally don't have any of that. The fact that it's Brian May's guitar means it would draw a pretty penny from some collectors, but that's not the fair market. He could insure it for a specific amount through a high-risk carrier like Lloyds of London, but it would be expensive as hell. So, he just does as he says - keeps a close eye on it.

It would never leave my eyesight, unless it was in a vault...

As cool as it is to have built it from even scavenged hardware, completely from scratch... the fact that he did it with his dad as a youngster is way cooler beyond all that. And that so many people have heard it - it's not just an experiment from youth collecting dust in the basement/attic. Not many people get to enjoy that - creating something new and unique and lasting with your dad.
