So, I've tried making bread before. Failed every single time.

Yesterday, I failed again. I could never get the dough to rise, (and I also completely screwed up the ingredients).

But today...

YES!
It's very tasty too. I see some good sandwiches in my near future.

that's awesome dude! congratz
my mom started baking bread from scratch like two years ago. since living back home in the last 9 months, i've been so spoiled having AMAZING fresh baked bread on a near daily basis. my girlfriend and i are learning some basic breads so we don't go through withdrawal this summer when we move. It's so satisfying and awesome.
once you start eating home-baked bread, store bought stuff becomes completely unappealing. it's like night and day

Cable and I have a bread machine.  It makes things a lot easier.  It also makes pretzel dough.  Drool...

That looks really good.

I had a bread machine about six years ago.

I used it a couple of times, and damn that bread was good! (I made a lemon poppy seed loaf, but unfortunately I can't remember what else. :dontknow:)
There is nothing like a loaf of fresh bread!  :icon_biggrin:

Would a bread machine give the same crust? I think there's one laying around somewhere.

And I know what you mean, dNA. This is so much better than store bread. Moist, nice crust, etc...

a bread machine will NOT give you the kind of crust an oven-baked loaf of bread will.

Are you using a stone or anything like that in the oven? Using a large flat stone for baking is more ilke baking in a brick oven. You can also get the same effect by preheating a large iron skillet in the oven while it preheats and then putting the bread in that. bake it w/ the cover on for a while (however logn it might need to bake minus a bit) then take the lid off to let the top get nice a crisp and golden. it's all about the way the heat is diffused and the bread isn't just dried out super fast on the outside before the inside bakes.

also, sometimes people call for an empty tray on a lower shelf to have some icecubes or water thrown in it - it evaporates as your baking and keeps the bread a little moister.

i'll try realy hard to remember to take pictures the next time my mom bakes a bread. it's a fuckin work of art.

This was just baked on a thick cookie sheet. That way, the bottom wouldn't get too hard. I don't like tough bread.

Hey Max,

It is very, very cool that you are delving into the world of baking.  Nothing beats a nice warm loaf of home made bread...
You must try a stone.  The stone draws the moisture out of the dough and will create a crust like nothing else can.
When you are ready, I will send you the recipe for garlic bread.
It is like nothing else you have ever had and I would only give it up to the deserving...
Send me a PM when  you are ready...
:rock-on:

Yep, and nothing gay about men baking. Dude, I make the meanest cheesecake this side of the Pacific. I make a pretty kick ass oatmeal raisin cookie too.

Well, a lot of the bread machine recipes are for just the dough.  The machine gets the dough ready, then you shape it and put egg white or whatever it might need on the outside and bake it in the oven.  So yeah, sometimes it's the same crust and sometimes it isn't.

BTW, if you like homemade bread, try making your own pasta some time.  It's amazing what a huge difference there is between store bought and homemade pasta.

agreed. i make the best apple pie of anyone in my family

One of the best things about finally getting an apartment of my own again is being able to bake bread!

Boy I've missed it. Store bought bread has waaay to much crap in it, it's like the companies don't know how to do it properly and just throw in a lot of crap and hope for the best. And it's all of the same white, wishy-washy, non-filling, non-textured variety too. Argh!

Sorry, but this kind of blatant, intentional stupidity upsets me :)

I thought this was gonna be a thread about "Baby I'm-A Want You"  and "Guitar Man"

YES! I WOULD LIKE A SLICE!

Definitely don't go for the bread machine. Kneedin' and sweatin' are integral parts of the delicious bread-making process. I've made a few good loaves of bread at home, and a couple awful ones too. An excellent, manly hobby.  :hello2:

If your bread is full of sweat, I'll pass.

Hey good effort Max! Absolutely LOVE fresh bread.

Was spoiled as a kid when my dad and I would go 'bush' and he had a freind who used to be a great cook.

Fred would, on occassions, bring his camp oven along (it weighed a ton), and he'd set about doing some Aussie bush damper. He'd dig the hole for the fire, burn a decent fire, then let the coals calm down, then place the oven in with the dough and pile on the ashes. then we'd wait.......salivating. :icon_tongue:

Being able to cook and do some things very well, is one way to a woman's heart, I reckon. Nothing gay about it, particularly if your intent is to win a woman over with your domesticity..... :evil4:
