I have an RC20XL that I love, also mostly for practice. The most important thing about it is to send it a processed signal, into the mic input - if you plug a twanky solidbody into the instrument input then try to process the whole thing, it doesn't work as well. I have it set up in the effects loop of a mini-mixer, but there are a couple of ways to do it - even just an overdrive or compresoer to boost and even out the initial signal is a big help.
I just looked, and it seems the RC-2 doesn't have a separate mic input, but just try and feed it something that already sounds OK, ok.... I really prefer these, or a digital delay, to a metronome.
