For those of us who still listen......  Bobby and Phil are doing the New Year's Grateful Dead tradition of a show on New Year's Eve!!!!  For those of us not in the San Fran Bay area Sirius radio's Dead channel is broadcasting it 3pm New Year's Day!!!!!!

Jackie Greene opens then Phil & Friends, then Ratdog!!!!  Wish I was there and not here on the forum no offense.  I haven't seen Bob since August, he only comes my way usually once a year.  Last time was opening for the Allmans in Hershey PA rode down on the bike first dead show on a motorcycle it was truly an awesome day.  A good buddy went with us on his bike and it was his first "dead" show.  Bob totally blew him away.  He wants a "dire wolf " tattoo now (like the inlay on Jer's Wolf guitar) This dude knew nothing about what it was really all about I kept telling him that he had to see for himself what it was all about.  This guy is a hard core biker type, and something about the feeling you get while you are there well it choked him up.  I call going to a Grateful Dead related show "going to church" and he looked at me and said, "Wow man it is religious!"  I have seen the boys in all their incarnations with and without Jer and I have taken a few newbies to see what it is all about, but this guy really got it.  I mean he's new to the game and I keep playing dead songs that are new to him which is cool.  What an amazing band.

They aren't the best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do.

Well I just had to respond by pimping my fave site, the only one that makes the internet worthwhile... well mebbe... :eek:ccasion14:

Klanch if you scroll down to "gd" there's a few hundred million streaming GD shows (goddam they sure played a lot), I've dipped into the "phil" stuff from Sept 2000 to Dec 2003 when Herring & Haynes were in it - they caught quite a spark from each other. There's 50 or so old Zappa shows, a few prime Mahavishnu shows (MY religious experience), Shakti, Quicksilver etc. Piles of old & new Jeff Beck shows, Medeski/SCOFIELD/Martin/Woods (Scofield plays better with them than he did ever since Miles, oops there he IS with Miles & Mike Stern). Recording quality is all over the place, some shows load slow, some don't load at all... a metaphor for life, or maybe a megaphor.

WOW what an awesome collection of music!!!!  I will be checking out some of those Allman Bros show too........

I used to use Archives.org for my digital show downloads.  When I first found it there was a ton of GD on it, but it seems like they are pulling more and more shows off of the site.  I like to download them as opposed to streaming them, so they are here on the computer.  My truck has a cd-dvd player in it that will play mp3 cd's so I will put a couple shows on a data cd and I can listen in the car that way....

I am gonna listen to the new years show today actually in about an hour and 45 minutes.  I had sirius for the longest time and some ball bag broke into my work truck and stole my receiver and my CB radio, so I cancelled the subscription, but I do have dish network TV, which has sirius on it. so I can still listen to channel 32

Here is another you tube video about the boys.  Possibly another "The Dead" tour?    Unfortunately I missed the State College Barak Obaba show....This promo was filmed there

I'm a Deadhead AND an Airhead.

I used to LOVE archive.org until they got a bogged down in litigation over soundboards.  Check out http://www.shnflac.net/  Charlie Miller's boots are outstanding.

You know I still have a couple of shoeboxes full of tapes.  Having the digital is the way to go because a cassette will eventually wear out.  It seems like the archive keeps getting smaller and smaller cause of the soundboard issue.  Unfortunately for us deadheads, they too have went the way of a corporation looking out for their bottom line.  I think they figured why should they give something away free of charge if people are willing to pay for it.  I don't think the policy of the free music trading is going to last very much longer.  I know you can still tape a show, but I am pretty sure the boys would rather you buy one of their show cd's after the show at $25 a pop.  Kinda sucks that the Grateful Dead went corporate on us, I guess Bobby has to pay for that mustache wax somehow, and Phil's liver wasn't free.

Wow am I in a bad mood for New Year's Day....... If I wouldn't have got the run around from UPS on my WGD, I would be in a great mood, but so is life...... I should probably go take a nap or something to cool off.  I don't even feel like working on my bass refinish project I'm so tired of waiting.  I'm gonna go play Battleship with my kid.
