Birdseye maple neck

What is the proper sequence for a birdseye maple neck that will be finished in clear lacquer? 
Is it necesary to fill or use a sanding sealer? 
Also, does anyone use sanding sealer before a grain fill? 
What about a clear water based grain fill?

no fill or seal needed...maple has a real tight grain.  Lacquer away.........
I have never used any and all mine turn out great.
