BIG RED started life as a 1960's Kay "Speed Demon", like the one shown below. I learned to play on this guitar:

I haven't changed anything on this beast since I did the upgrades in the early 90's. I put a Gibson P-100 in the neck position, and it is muddy, utter garbage. I really hate anything stacked, and you can't do that without canceling some frequencies so I'm really surprised MFGs started doing it anyway. The first humbuckers were side-by-side for a reason. I'm hoping the vintage staple P-90 will bring back some clarity and sweet tones to the neck position. The L-500 has always sounded great at the bridge in this guitar.

I don't remember exactly why it came the way it did, but the P-100 didn't come with any clear way to mount it (I had never played with any P-90 style pups before that). It didn't have the bottom bracket with the ears/tabs, so I'm thinking maybe I got a standard P-90 soapbar and picked up a dog ear cover on the side. At any rate, you'll see that I drilled my own holes in the middle of the cover and mounted the bobbins directly to the cover. I clipped the ears off of a junk humbucker and used the cut ends to terminate the humbucker mounting screws on the bottom...

How much did you have to drop on that staple-pole-piece P90?  That's a sexy bit of kit, right there.

$225 (ouch!). That bit of kit is worth half as much as the original guitar if you bought one today, I am sure!

Since I only removed enough material to clear the bobbins initially, the pickup cavity will need to be enlarged as the bottom bracket won't fit in the hole. :(

Well, you'll certainly be the only kid on your block (or in your congressional district, or even in your time zone) to have one.

Dunno if it's been said elsewhere, but thank you for the expansive posts about your history as a guitarist, guitar-modifier, and big-hair-enthusiast.  It's been fun reading your posts and admiring (and, to be honest, occasionally scratching my head at) your axes.

LOL... well I wasn't sure, but I am glad someone is appreciating it. I am doing this chronicle for my own benefit, mostly....

As I type this, I am between coats spray-lacquering the beveled edge on the headstock to match the body... ala THIS action:

As a side note, I was unconcerned with the red dot sticker on the heel, until I went to peel it off. The satin finish was applied over the top of it... WTF?!?

Anyway... some problems I am faced with. In addition to enlarging the pickup hole, the body will need to be converted to a four hole bolt-on with neck plate as the side-adjust mechanism is not compatible with the existing three-hole mount. Besides needing access to a drill press, I am disabled at the moment and any major work would be a bit difficult for me to do. So after some minor cleanup of my masking edges, I will be handing off BIG RED to my pals at Mike Lull's Guitar Works for completion.

The red dot is applied to all finished necks to indicate that they've been finished.  It's on under the finish because on satin necks (especially the non-vintage-tint ones) it's not always obvious that there's a finish on it.

That's super neato!  I'm a fan of the arrow headstock, but the Mooncaster will look perfect with that body.

Yeah the dot thing on the satin finishes is weird, but it is kind of a neat way to say "yes, it really is finished!"

Thanks! I just dropped the guitar off at Mike Lull's today... I said, "Here's a FUNKYTOWN project for ya!" and went on to explain, and all he said was, "I've learned long ago, never pass judgment on work someone brings to me..." LOL ;)
