Bender for the 8 Ball

With that all done,  the next step is to carve a big ass hole in the back.  I've done this a time or two before, so I have a handy dandy template.

That Joe Latch guy with the four benders is a really good player, but it looks like every time he really gets going he forgets the benders and plays straight up! (Happens all the time on C6th pedal steel too... "fudge all these pedals, where's the NOTE!" :laughing3:

Wow. Too much fun! <grin>

The most dangerous step you say, then you put the body on the press stage without an anti-skid pad or any kind of clampage? Living dangerously, my friend.

But, you can't argue with success.

Incidentally, why did you use the "soldering iron method" to install those ferrules when you had a drill press to play with? Might not have had that finish damage upon removal had you done so.

It'll be less obvious once the ferrules are back in. Maybe take a Sharpie after the light spots before you do.

Hey, don't knock it, guys.  I've repaired an 80k piano with a sharpie and super glue... and no one can tell.  ;)

Kay - let's route this sucker!

all done.  The goop below the ferrule holes is just some sawdust

Nicely done.  Ferrule holes still look like ass.

Now for the big question:  does it fit???

of course it fits!  :headbang:

Can I have the sawdust for my garden  :icon_jokercolor:

Gee .. I hope that 'Joe Latch' bender video didn't give you to many idea's  :laughing7:

If I had what he use's, I'd pull my back out or twist my neck or something serious.
It's like doing a severe aerobics class.  :icon_biggrin:  To work all those Benders  :o

Besides the contortions involved, it's a lot to think about and keep track of. I couldn't use that scheme. Actually, I'd have trouble with just a B bender. Where is the B, anyway? Isn't it supposed to be making honey to feed its kids? Why would you bend it? Seems cruel, and not a little unusual.

Sorry to keep the thread on track, but I have some updates.

All the talk about what straplock is best made me put these on the bender:

These I had to cut down a machine screw on so that it would not poke out the back of the metal and scratch the guitar.  I installed that screw with a nice drop of blue locktite.

That's a good idea. He obviously has a router and isn't afraid to use it. That would clean that ferrule business right up.

Hmmmm.  Not sure.  I think that the ferrule block will interfere with the bender plate.

Thanks for thinking of me though.  :icon_thumright:

Who says you have to use a plate for the bender, it's not like it's supporting the Brooklyn bridge, it's just wiggling a little string. Try not to over engineer, you can set yourself up for limitations...I'm just saying... :dontknow:

Looks like there is plenty of room to me...

I know this isn't helpful after the fact, but putting tape down before you drill the holes helps keep the finish from cracking.
Still it is a really cool mod.  I had never heard of a B-bender until this thread.  Not much of a country guy.

ectually, the finish cracked when I removed the ferrules.  Installing them (some 9 months ago) was no problem.  :)

I wonder if heating sinks them in, maybe cooling will shrink them out. I wonder if my doctor would be game for having me bring a guitar in to the clinic and sparing some liquid nitrogen.

I don't have any string thru's myself but I think it would be fun to try it.

And while I'm here, I haven't been able to get the image out of my head about swinging the double decker pedal steel around your neck. I think you should just do it. I be your audience will be very impressed. You could do it as a followup to the debut of the new 8 ball :)
