Rick Beato breaks down Living On A Prayer. I know we have some ... ahem tribute players.. Thoughts of his handling it?

He hit on most of the same things I would have pointed out:

  • The talkbox/bass riff that hangs on Em while the chords change underneath sets up a great tension/resolution to open the song
  • The talkbox is fun ear candy
  • Feel-good lyrics about working-class people
  • The bassline in the chorus is perfection
  • The drums throughout are just hook after hook after hook - you cannot help but air-drum through the song
  • A crazy-singable chorus
  • The archetypal 80's key change for the last chorus
I have performed that song roughly three bajillion times. Not once has it ever failed to land.

Not once.

Not the biggest Beato fan. Not sure why. He seems like an intelligent and decent guy, but something just rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps he's just too New York, and I'm too Seattle.

He's from near Rochester. Which to most NooYawkers is basically the midwest. :icon_jokercolor:

He's grating and it takes him half an hour to say anything. This is one of the first I've watched in it's entirety, and it was good.

Btw the limit of 0.5^n as N approaches infinity is 1, so I guess we can safely say that Jon BonJovi has just about made it there by now.

I am left wondering how Aaron manages to keep the guitar and talk box parts going while he is air drumming?

I have to agree, I play it in a cover band, and this song is always a hit regardless of the audience (even with the younger crowds).

Eh, he's competent but he's also a narcissist.

Speaking of narcissism...

here is an original song I wrote a while back for my Jovi tribute to perform. I obviously borrowed as many Bon Jovi-isms as I could, and yet it still doesn't stick the landing like LOAP does, which goes to show how very difficult it is to write a perfect song.

Here is a little promo reel of Non Jovi we did a while back, in which you can observe me playing guitar and talkbox to LOAP while resisting the urge to air-drum:

And just to make it an even three, here is a selection from our most recent NJ show. It was shot just last month at the Tulalip Casino. I hope you enjoy the hat:

who is this Beato guy and why is he considered an authority on anything other than selling jewelry at a pawn shop?

actually he also looks like the manager last night i saw @ Outback Steakhouse (#eatfresh) that was sent to a table of obnoxious customers who just got a well-done steak delivered to their table instead of a medium-well and has to comp their meal because theyre causing a scene and ruinnig everyone elses dining experience. they weren't Dr. Pepper, but you wouldnt have known that from the 23 flavors of sass they were giving him. poor guy. no wonder he moved to youtube vidz.

but hey i dunno. i guess hes alright. he just seems like the kinda guy who opens his bags of chips with scissors, or whose favorite app on his phone is 'phone', or believes in astrology or tries to prove how fake it is every conversation even when it doesn't come up organically. something off about that kinda personality y'kno?

i mean... i don't believe in astrology either, but then again we capricorns are naturally skeptical

I like what he does in the what makes this song great videos. Not sure where he gets access to some of these tracks, but it's cool. Despite wanting to be a rockstar for a long time, I suck at picking out things more than a few layers deep.

And that's a post you could really have skipped on.

I agree with BroccoliRob and Aaron - I'm not fan whatsoever about YouTubers who don't really add value. But I agree with everyone that Prayer (and pretty much all jbj) is epic.

PS: I'm saying this as Metallica die hard (note: James Hetfield used to play an explorer with a "kill bon jovi" sticker)

My biggest beef with beato is his rants when he gets blocked but refuses to challenge and fight for fair use. Which it obviously is. It's like literally the textbook definition of fair use.
But instead he uses his own well connected friends to get his own videos unblocked, reinforcing precedence for YouTubes unilateral stranglehold on policy and allows the bot mechans to stand

Well…

LOL that's hilarious. i find JBJ's music as milquetoast as popular-rock gets but i dont want the man dead

Beato is OK, though sometimes his favored "guitar expert" guy (Dave) cracks me up because he really doesn't have much to add and often gets basic things wrong.

I find Beato's music theory videos to be a bit lacking. He's not really that good at explaining the ideas, and often goes off on tangents. And he doesn't seem to move incrementally through the knowledge. Explains a basic idea and illustrates it with concepts that are much, much further down on the knowledge path.
I wouldn't spend a penny on his lessons

A much better music theory channel on YouTube is David Bennett Piano. He doesn't bellyache about fair use, will record his own versions if he needs to illustrate a point.

Also really god is Signals Music Theory. I think he's perfect for people dipping their toe in the water for theory. Does excellent communication--usually sticks to one specific topic, and gives clear analysis of how it is used by composers and songwriters.

I'm ashamed to say I had a rather enjoyable afternoon hate reading the anti-Beato threads on Reddit. I wonder if I'll ever see that video where he berates his son for 10 minutes for not practicing his oboe. But apparently he copyright bans re-uploads.

I was almost starting to feel sorry for him, till I watched his last video. 2 minutes of him droning on about his hair, 4 minutes of him reading out some article,  badly, then 15 minutes of him shilling his book, including him watching one of his own videos, twice.

No, no don't be like that, breath. Rise above it all. He's making people happy, some people seem to even like his old university notes complied as a $40 'music course'. Live and let live…

See earlier jokes - he's arrived by now. He got 3/4 of the way there the 2nd time he sang it.
