Basses: balancing volume between the strings

Ok, so I've never had this problem before with a Warmoth neck, so I'm not entirely sure it's just the neck.  The low E string is significantly louder than the other three (on a P-bass).  This wasn't the case with the American Fender neck that came off of it the body.  I also switched out the pickup for a Quarter Pound Basslines at the same time.

Could I have done something?  Do you folks have any experience/advice?

i know p-bass pickups are usually slanted. could it be possible that the new pickups were put in flat, so the E is much louder than the rest because of it?

on a side note, how do you like those quarter pounds?

It's not slanted, and i did try monkeying around with that, but the difference is too dramatic for it to help.

I like QP Duncans ok, but I'm still searching for my "perfect" P-bass pickup.  None seem to compare to what I had in a '73 P-bass.

It sounds like the distance of the pickup needs to be lowered at the E string.  I have these pups in my '65 P-bass.  They sound great.  Combined with a Warmoth neck - maple/ebony - the sound produced is a wonderfully bright growl.

I had the same problem with my QP P pickup really, and I just lowered the bass side a bit - and raised the other. MIA P-basses have the two bits peaked in the middle, and that works well.

I'm loving the QPs too but I'm also actively looking forward to when the Roadhouse P-bass p'ups come out. I keep pestering him and getting fairly definite maybes that they may or may not be in some sort of progress.  :icon_thumright:  So that's going for us.

String volume is also very dependent on string height off of the neck.
More excursion  = more sound.

I get this and the pickup position from teh strings thing.  I'm just saying, the low E is SIGNIFICANTLY louder no matter what adjustments I make to string height and pickups.  I'm looking for something odd here.  I'm about to start switching necks and bodies around.
