I have not.  Seem very well build.  Not enough gain in those for me.

Haha, you play a Mesa mini recto right? there's more gain in that amp than anyone should even need! (awesome amp by the way, there's just something about EL84's that I love!) (also, I just bought the new Orange #4 terror head, it's a 15watt Terror output, with the Rockerverb 100 preamp voicing and a 3-band EQ, it's freakin awesome, but I'll post it in its own thread tomorrow lol)

That #4 is awesome.  A Tiny Terror on Steroids!  With an effects loop.  Nice Job.  What are you running it thru?  Post some tones too.  I would love to hear it.  It seems VERY responsive to rolling the volume up and down too to back on the gain and clean up.  I have heard they are hard to find!!  I love ORANGE products.  Their tone is so unique.  My son has a dual terror and is eying both the#4 and TH30.  he is looking for something with a loop.

You are right...something special about EL84 tubes.  The Mini Recto is more "creamy" and smooth compared to a regular Dual or Trip Recto.  I contribute this to its EL84 tubes.  Lots of gain.  I barely have the gain past 12-2 o'clock on the amp (just about 1/2 of what it has).  It cleans up nice too.  I used it during a gig at my Church Festival Last week.  Christian Rock and Pop covers,  I really had to dial it back.  In the end we did a LifeHouse cover of Hanging by the Moment.  I turned up the gain, broke out my Warmoth Soloist with EMGs and let it rip.  The tone was amazing.

Actually, there is something special about EL84 tubes.  They are the only power tubes that I know of that don't have a 1:1 slope on their trans-conductance graph.  The upshot of this is that EL84 tubes have gain.  Not a lot, but they have a gain of about 4 or 5.  This makes amps made using them, especially amps that don't have a negative feedback loop, just that little bit more lively and touch sensitive.

I've often wondered if it's possible to model that somehow with other power tubes.  Some power mosfets on the transformer primaries?  Some kind of active circuit on the screens?  Not sure.  Interesting though.

I want this so freaking bad. I love the tiny terror, but it never gave me enough versatility. I play everything from 40's blues to modern metal to carter family stuff. I like the dark terror, but this blows it out of the water.

What the #4 and dark terror loose is a true clean channel.  I play too much acoustic stuff not to have one.  If you want ORANGE tome and a clean channel, the TH30 is a good choice too.  If I did not have the MESA mini...the TH30 wold be a logical choice.

It may sound weird comparing the two amps, but I can make my MESA sound 95% of what my sons ORANGE Dual Terror sounds like.  The EQ section on the MESA is that good.

I have had my Avatar 2x12 w/V30's for like 10 years now!
I don't know if it is the best sounding closed back cabinet but it sure was a great investment, especially now with a different speaker in the combo amp.  :icon_thumright:
