In my experience Alvarez solid tops are the best lower-end acoustics out there. There was a mahogany OO body at my local shop in LA that was sweet and cheap, I nearly bought it couple of times. No idea about the electronics.
Edit: Oh, for recording get a large diaphragm condenser mic and keep your old acoustic. Definitely. NO electronic system is anywhere near as good sounding on record as an average well-placed mic. No comparison.
For live use, Ovations go for cheap, used, and are a dream to play plugged in because they have very little feedback issue and a good amplified tone - designed from the start to be plugged in. I had a standard balladeer and it was really nice, also pretty normal looking, not sure why I ever got rid of it actually.
