I'd like to dive into pedal building, what would be some good books to get me going? I can solder well, but I need something to help me jump into circuits etc. specifically that whole field of effects pedals.

any info would be greatly appreciated!

Don't know about books, but I'd recommend these:

http://buildyourownclone.com/ - good kits that are easy to start with
http://buildyourownclone.com/board/ - forums for BYOC, some really helpful people
http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/ - these are the kits I started with. A little cheaper but not as good as BYOC
http://www.diystompboxes.com/wpress/ - Some interesting articles, but I don't go here all that much
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/ - Forums for DIYSB, again really helpful people and some pretty cool projects
http://www.freestompboxes.org/ - Lots of schematics and projects
http://www.beavisaudio.com/ - lot of articles explaining stuff
http://www.guitarpcb.com/ - Good supplier of PCB's once you're ready to source your own parts and do your own projects

Those are the main things I was using when I was building pedals a few years ago.

Good info. To that I'd add:

1. Stay in school
2. Don't do drugs
3. Vote Republican
4. Learn to tune your guitar
5. Buy a gun, and learn to shoot it (away from yourself)
6. Learn to play slow, so you can play fast
7. Don't wear green or plaid if you're a male, unless you're golfing
8. Always use a metronome
9. Let the pros build the SFX

You have to plan your work and work your plan. It is a formula for success that cannot fail.

I did all of that except for the vote Republican (I voted NDP in the last federal election) and look what happened to me!
