Looking into finish options for a solid mahogany body.  I wanted a lighter finish.  I have heard you can bleach it.  Would this harm the glue joints?

You can bleach it, it turns a good bit lighter - shades can vary.  Worst case, bleach it, if it doesn't fit the expectation, stain it back.

I'm sure Tonar will suggest a bleach to use.  Online sources say peroxide based bleach is best for mahogany.  There are also chlorine based and oxalic (or oxilic?) acid is also used.

Be careful with that bleach. I wore goggles last time I used it, and still ended up with a blonde eye brow.

:laughing7: Ya can't be serious

No, but I did get a rash everywhere that it touched me. I dropped the container and it exploded all over the place.

Exactly what are you trying to get to ulimately? Bleach it lighter to dye it? Try to get to a whitish mahogany?

I was curious about bleaching, but what I wanted to do was lighten the base color without reducing grain, and all the bleaching I've seen seems to reduce the visibility of the grain markings too. (In fact in the examples I've seen, that was kind of the point.)

unless you soak the wood in the stuff, the glue will be fine.  You only dampen the wood and work fast with it, then a quick rinse and dry.  Dont let the wood stay wet for long periods, and you'll be ok.
