The from-scratch building of a Strat, in serious detail.

Wow, that looks tedious.  My best freind is a CNC programmer and is doing his body that way, which is the way I'd go I'm sure if I was building one from scratch.

The man is really cool, think it has been posted before, tough... Might be Mr Greg "Tonar" if I'm not wrong...

Really? I wouldn't do a neck, but for a body I'd go the band-saw, sanding block and router way.

He's one of the guys profiled in the recent "Premier Guitar" article, along with My New Hero Jay-Jay M.:
http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2009/Jan/5_Tele_Style_Builders_You_Should_Know.aspx

I'd like to do the whole kaboodle, but I'd have to do most of it with a buck knife & a Dremel, cause that's what I have. :icon_tongue:

That recessed neck plate is hot.

For those that think Warmoth parts are a bit pricey, just read through what this guy does to cut and shape the body! (Of course Warmoth has the luxury of using CNC mills to help shape the bodies, but still...)

Thanks for the link RLW. That's the most fun I've had looking at pictures on the web that didn't involve me having to take a nap afterwards.

This is the first time I have seen this.  I am aware of Ron Kim and have seen some of his other work on the Telecaster discussion page.  The detail here is great and the pictures wonderful.  Ron’s comments regarding lacquers were right on the money.  There is so much conjecture and misinformation about lacquer finishing but he is right with his process and time frames.
I also love his sense of humor. Thank you for posting it.

Damn you Rich!  I just spent the last hour on that page!

Now I seem to have the strange notion that I can actually make a body from scratch.
Perhaps some beer will help remove this fantasy...

It removed any notion of ever making a electric from spruce. He appears to be a pretty careful guy, and that body got pretty easily dinged up.

And isn't it funny how the guys like him who really know what they're doing are always the least pretentious and down to earth?

LOL mayfly, me too at least an hour < and I loved every bit of that

Thanks RLW for posting that  Makes me want to build one from scratch too

Or make bigger  :toothy12:
One of my views of "geniality" (or mastery) is: make tough things look damn easy or make something easy from the first time that really change everything, simplifying...

Not always they're least pretentious, unfortunately, but this guy looks a serious nice guy!

Ha! I too spent an hour on that page, but came to the conclusion that I'd much rather pay for another Warmoth body than trying that myself, even if I had access to the tools! (Okay, maybe I'd give it a go if any of my neighbors had a full woodworking shop.)

That was pretty cool.  If I don't develop Parkinson's, maybe I can try that after I retire.  :laughing7:

Wow, now that was impressive!  I just spent a good hour reading that.  It helped me appreciate how much goes into it and gives me hope of doing something like that in the future.

A very good read and very interesting.

-1 point for mentioning the word "liberal" - -  it's like tourettes or something with some people :laughing7:
