Hey everyone! I'm getting ready to buy parts for my W guitar, and wanted to post the specs to see if anyone had some advice/ comments/ concerns for what it is that I have in mind. (Let me know if more info is needed, as I really have no idea as what does and does not need to be mentioned).

Body(SG): Mahogany (1 3/4")
Humbuckers at the neck and bridge
2 tone and 2 volume controls
Top input jack
Bridge: Recessed TOM/ Arch string
Contoured heel
Finish: Tansparent green

Neck (LP)
Warmoth, pro-angled
Maple with Ebony fingerboard
Standard thin back contour
10-16" compound radius
22 frets, size= 6130
Vintage tint gloss

Any comments would be greatly appreciated, especially since I really have no guitar building experience and I would like to start out right. Thanks!  :rock-on:

Overall, everything looks good to me. Nothing screams out as being wrong.

Maple on mahogany is a little bit of a unusual choice...but when I say unusual, you should take a look at some of my guitars.  :occasion14:

all looks good - if you are not that familiar with building and were going with the gibson thing you may want to consider a conversion neck instead of a fender scaled instrument.  It will be truer to the SG vibe.

The compound radius and T-O-M may take a little filing to be perfect.  Some say they have no problem, others go with a different fretboard radius.  IMO, the compound radius can't be beat.  It's woth it to me to make the bridge match the radius rather than match the radius to the bridge.  Then again, it's a preference thing and may be a non-issue.

Also, what nut material and nut width?  Any dots or inlay on the fretboard?  What headstock shape?  Remember to specify what size tuner ream.

Max already beat me to the exotic non-finish neck.  If you do go Maple, I have a Maple/Rosewood neck on one of my builds, my only regret is that I got plain Maple.  They have some very nice Flame, Quilt, and Birdseye available.  It costs a little more, but well worth it.

I was going to go with the 1-11/16" nut with and the black TUSQ XL, cream dot inlays, and the LP headstock shape. And I'm thinking about using gototh/ grover tuners.

Why should I go with an unfinished neck?

Not so much for tone, because that is subjective and there are a few that will get close to Maple maybe not as bright, but it's a feel thing.  When you play on Maple, you're playing on the finish.  A gloss finish can feel tacky, and a Satin finish will eventually go glossy with use.  Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with finished Maple, it doesn't feel bad, just not as good as no finish.  Many of the exotics don't require a finish like Maple does.  Besides, this is custom and that's just one more element that you don't find on most off-the-wall guitars.  Go to a GC and look at every guitar hanging on the wall.  How many have finished necks?

exotic w/o finish is similar price to maple w/. it'll make your sg stand out in the crowd. i have a purple heart neck and couldn't be happier.
with a green finish on the body id go wenge or koa or goncoloalves, wait i cant decide, oh ziricote or pau ferro you dont see many of those.

Hmmm... Apparently I have much more to consider!  :laughing11: Thanks for all your feedback, I will definitely be posting more once i get this project underway.
