Acrylic spray over tru oil?

My tele body has 10 coats of tru oil on it. If I let it dry for a week or two will I be able to spray acrylic water based colors over it? The plan was only use tru oil to pop the grain and build up a layer of base protection. I've heard people sucessfully used nitro over tru oil but should I treat acrylic the same as nitro in this case?

I could be wrong but probably not a good idea.

What not more true oil?  Folks use oil because they do not want a lacquer or poly finish.

Sure! Just don't expect it to stick, and make sure you have enough solvents around to clean it up afterwards so you can start all over. Also, you should share any new cuss words you invent <grin>

Found a mahogany test piece and tried layering acrylic clearcoat over tru oil and oh boy it sticks nicely (and only needed half a day cure time, too!). Just flatsanded the body because of the raised maple figure and removed a chunk of tru oil layers. Gotta take another few days to layer up the tru oil thick enough before hoping for the best with the acrylic paint on top. Wish me luck!

I've been thinking the exact same thing. I regret having used oil on 2 guitars, I regret it extremely. and I am very tempted to sand off the oil (its not really tru or tungoil, its a penetrating oil) and redo it with acrylic.

Just curious - what is it about the oil finish that's not doing it for you?

feels cheap. its easier to get the acrylic glossy than oil.
