A tale of tuner buttons

A long time ago I asked if anyone had tried these tuner buttons:

Now I can give some info on this to you guys. A while ago I ordered me a set of these to put on my Fender Super-Sonic:

I put these Hipshot tuners on the guitar and although they're good (not as good as the Gotoh's I've got on my other guitars in my opinion) I found that the normal tuner buttons can feel cramped. I guess it's because the headstock is reversed. It often feels like I'm about to knock the next tuner over accidentally when I'm reaching over to tune a string.
So, that's why I wanted to try these:

I can now report that they sort of fit. As you can see. But they're drilled /machined slightly bigger than the axle on the Hipshot tuners, meaning that there's a bit of slack, unfortunately.

But if the fit had been perfect I would like to say that this is the ultimate shape of a tuner buttons. It feels so much better and easier - faster - tuning a string up to pitch.
If you ever get the chance to try these - go for it!

Thanks - interesting to get an opinion on these. I see Hipshot do make some that hopefully would fit better - but only in satin chrome and black.

I guess not being able to use a pegwinder isn't much of an issue now we have lockers.

Yes, the Hipshot buttons would naturally fit like they're supposed to, but then there's the question of getting hold of these ...

Last time I checked it was a ridiculous price getting some to Sweden, so I scrapped the idea. Then when I found out about the Schaller ones, my local store could order them in a week. And although they were a bit pricey I didn't have to pay shipping and a customs fee.

Interesting thing to try. Thanks for the input. Maybe some day I'll jump in and give a set a whirl. (pun?)

I think they're attractive. No problems with leverage to turn them, being round instead of the more traditional flat?

None what so ever. Works and feels really well.

More Tuner Tales:

I also took the buttons, which are Gotoh's, from my old Ibanez S-guitar:

and put them on my 7/8-Tele, Röde Baronen, the one with the bloodwood neck:

And the result was pretty cool I think:

What do you think?

It's the little things that set a custom instrument apart from the rest of the crowd. Excellent choice of buttons, really snazzes up both headstocks! I too spend an inordinate amount of time deciding on little things like buttons and screw colors. It's part of the fun....  :headbang:

I really like the look, as I've looked into them before and I think they're great for "one-offs", but doing a production run with those I can only image the slow down in production time for setups.  Can't really get a string winder on them to speed up the string up.

If a tool could be developed to facilitate expedient setups, I think it may gain some traction in the marketplace.
