Hi all, it's been a while.
I'm missing my P bass, so I'm on the hunt for parts. Can anyone tell me what the difference between a 72 P and a "Standard" P body is? I just can't tell anything from the pics I've found.

Standard top or rear routed control cavity

72 top routed control cavity which is different in shape to the standard.

That is what I am aware of. There may be different options available due to the different routs on each.

I finally figured it out. Looking at the pics with a pickguard, the controls on the 72 are higher up on the body. The volume knob is even with the mounting screw for the bottom rout. On the standard they are closer to the bottom.

All comes down to the pickguard style. The Warmoth '72 P-bass is  supposed to use a more stylized pickguard designed to match the Tele Thinline. It required moving the controls. Unless this was a rare Fender model, I think it's a Warmoth original/hybrid, because the real early '70's P-Bass didn't have this kind of pickguard.

I think it's interesting Warmoth offers a '51, '54, '72 and Standard P-Bass, but not the '70s Jazz Bass pickup spacing.

I don't know if you're referring here ONLY to Precisions, but they do offer '70s pickup spacing on their Jazz bass bodies.
