I just had a chance to play the fender champion 600 amp and wrote about it here after really liking it's tone. The forums' own tfarny then recommended the epiphone valve junior. I did a bit of research and it seems to be another great little amp. So I'm curious; what other 5 watt, 2 tube, A class amps does everybody recommend?

All the amps mentioned have one power tube and for my taste they are not any special. My favorite 5 Watt-1 tube is the Laney Lionheart 5LT combo but it's much more expensive. I would also prefer the Tech 21 Trademark 30 or 60 over any of the mentioned amps. Transistor amps are easier to control indoors. If you want to go tube and low price avoid the combo verions with 6 & 8 inch speakers. It would be better to go with at least a 10 inch speaker although the best solution is a head with an external cab.

I mentioned the V jr because it's cheap.  I have the blackheart and it's great. But I never play it because I now own a blackface vibro champ clone with a tweed voicing switch from ceriatone. It has a tube recto so it doesn't quite meet your requirements but it sounds like absolute heaven in a box. Next guitar amp I buy will be another ceriatone for sure but I'm saving for a bass amp at the moment.

Granted,Im biased to the Laneys, since I've been using them for 22 yrs or so,but...

The new Laney Cub 8- 5 watts, 1x 12ax7, 1 x 6v6 gt. Awsome tones,pedal friendly from what I've heard.

One amp I unfortunately cannot recommend is the Peavey Valve King Royal 8.

It had some good reviews in magazines and also on other forums, so I went down to a guitar shop and checked one out. I compared it with the Fender Champion 600, which was the only other similar valve (tube) amp they had available. Of the two I preferred the Peavey so I ended up buying one. Basically I had spent a long time using digital modelling software and wanted to try something with real tubes to see if they are as good as they are made out to be.

Of course, you don't really know what an amp (or any musical product, really) sounds like until you have it at home and have spent much longer playing it than is possible in the shop, and after really spending a long time trying to work with this amp I find I am disappointed with it..

Basically, with single coil pickups, a graphic EQ and a lot of hard work I have been able to get some usable clean tones from it, but no better (and a lot more time consuming) than I could get from an average digital modelling product. But as far as overdrive goes, I just can't get it to work for me, and I have difficulty getting any usable sounds with humbuckers.

I have heard that I could maybe get better results by replacing the valves or speaker, but really, there's only so much work I'm prepared to put into this thing, so at the moment it's just sitting in a cupboard.

From this I have come to the conclusion that tube gear is not worth buying unless it's the really high end stuff that I can't justify the cost of, especially since I can get acceptable results from the modelling gear.

marshall has a new "Class5" amp coming out all tube class A  haven't got to try one yet but the reviwes look good

got the blackheart. It's awesome. I will never need a louder amp, and the tone is great. I got it second hand with brand new amp tubes. I don't recall the brand of the tubes. I am very happy with my purchase. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help me come to this decision.  :rock-on:

Everyone I've recommended it too has wound up being real happy.

One tube swap combo I need to add to the thread is a VERY pricy one, guy I know wanted to use the amp for recording and get louder clean sounds out of the amp, so he used a set of NOS Mullards, don't know where he got them, he said he'd spent about $125 for the two tubes, description is on a website with links below (NOT where he got them, next time I run into him I'll ask). With this set you can crank the Little Giant up to about 8 before they start saturating:
