One amp I unfortunately cannot recommend is the Peavey Valve King Royal 8.
It had some good reviews in magazines and also on other forums, so I went down to a guitar shop and checked one out. I compared it with the Fender Champion 600, which was the only other similar valve (tube) amp they had available. Of the two I preferred the Peavey so I ended up buying one. Basically I had spent a long time using digital modelling software and wanted to try something with real tubes to see if they are as good as they are made out to be.
Of course, you don't really know what an amp (or any musical product, really) sounds like until you have it at home and have spent much longer playing it than is possible in the shop, and after really spending a long time trying to work with this amp I find I am disappointed with it..
Basically, with single coil pickups, a graphic EQ and a lot of hard work I have been able to get some usable clean tones from it, but no better (and a lot more time consuming) than I could get from an average digital modelling product. But as far as overdrive goes, I just can't get it to work for me, and I have difficulty getting any usable sounds with humbuckers.
I have heard that I could maybe get better results by replacing the valves or speaker, but really, there's only so much work I'm prepared to put into this thing, so at the moment it's just sitting in a cupboard.
From this I have come to the conclusion that tube gear is not worth buying unless it's the really high end stuff that I can't justify the cost of, especially since I can get acceptable results from the modelling gear.
