what are  the positions for 2 hum guitar 1 b&n
                                                          2 b&n single
                                                          3 n&b single....OR....?

I'm not sure what you're asking. But, on most guitars with two pickups (regardless of the type), a three position switch gives you bridge, bridge + neck, and neck.

thanks cagey, you don't seem to be bothered by newbie questions, good for us newbs eh.  i was wayyyy off

Just be sure to put on your tombstone "Cagey said I could do it!" It's like a "get out of jail free" card <grin>

To be specific, pickup selectors almost always run the pickups in parallel when both are used.
Though series is also possible with SPDT or DPDT center-off or SP3T/DPDT On-On-On switches.

If you want single coil options, you will need a rotary toggle switch with at least three poles, in order to shunt coils, in addition to pickup selection. It is also possible to do coil splitting when the pickups are soloed, using a DP3T/4PDT On-On-On switch.
