Yeah, I finished mine with clear grain filler and a wiped gloss poly, and it darkened a lot. I bought a tele body, too, and am going to finish it the same way. I love the look!
Thanks! Actually, I didn't stain it at all- the roasted swamp ash just darkens like that after applying a clear finish for some reason. I love the look...
Thanks- yes, there is a satisfaction for having done one to my own specs!
I've already bought a roasted swamp ash Tele body... guess I'm hooked now! ;) I have a neck I put on a Classic Vibe Custom Tele last year. Trying to decide whether to use that or order another roasted maple neck -I...
Finally finished! I think it turned out pretty good for a first-timer, but definitely a learning experience. Since I decided to use wipe on poly every time I tried to sand it I ended up going through the finish, so finally wound up just using 000 steel wool and buffing compound/polish.
Here are...
Yeah, I just wanted to do it for the experience and because I enjoy tackling projects like this for some perverse reason... must be a congenital defect. :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:
Just a quick progress report. I have a light coat of satin poly on the neck and 5 or 6 coats of gloss on the body. I'm liking how the neck looks with the body. I haven't done any finish sanding or buffing yet. I think I'll wait a few days or maybe a week to let the poly fully cure.
Thanks for the clarification. I've been doing some research (aka googling!) and it seems likely to be due to the extreme humidity the day I applied it. Minwax advised another user with a similar issue to rub it down with paint thinner and it should reactivate it. Low humidity for the next few...
Beautiful! After working on the finish for my bare body, I'm starting to think it would be well worth the extra $ to have Warmoth finish it! :laughing7:
The body is still tacky in places after applying the first coat of poly on Saturday. Does anyone know if it could be due to applying poly over the Solarez UV cure resin grain sealer? I've never used that product before, but have used the wipe-on poly on several table tops and never had this issue.
Finally got started on this build. I used Solarez Grain Sealer/Filler first- three coats with sanding in between. I put the first coat of wipe-on poly on it Saturday afternoon/evening in my garage. The next morning it was still very tacky, which I figure was due to the extremely high humidity...
This stuff supposedly does not shrink, which is why it piqued my interest. I'm wondering about doing a dark filler, like Stew-Mac's Polytone first to darken the grain, then going over it with this stuff...
Cool- that's what I'm looking for. I'd like for the body to be darker than the neck. However, since this stuff is a resin, I'm concerned it may not give that effect... hmm, decisions, decisions.
Anyone ever heard of this stuff? After doing a ton of research, I thought this would probably work well since I want to wipe on poly. That's how I usually do table tops and have had great results- of course I don't have to fill those... I read that normal filler could be pulled out of the grain...
