They have just downgraded the appearance on the builder. Apparently they do take feedback seriously which is nice to see. I just got my order in and I will say the standard top is pretty fantastic.
Yes, exactly. The pictures on the website along with what kind of flame maple top you'd get at a similar price point indicates something very different than what OP got. And as for other commenters, the amount of the flame isn't really the issue in OP's top. It is how splotchy (don't know the...
I'm indicating that his post is a joke. There's a very large chasm between what OP got and what a "special top" would be. OP isn't asking for 5A or even 3A. What he got wouldn't even pass on a decent squire
:icon_jokercolor: He's not wanting a special top. He's wanting a top that doesn't look like garbage. OP's top would hardly be acceptable for a $400 guitar. If they want to sell tops like this, fine, just make it clear that this is the kind of result you will likely get.
It is a little absurd that anyone would pretend that OP's top is acceptable. If that is what you should expect for the standard flame option, then either Warmoth should not offer it or they should make it very clear what to expect.
I would not say the Alnico Pro 2s have a lot of clarity.
Have you tried 250k pot for the JB? That is how Seymour Duncan himself uses it. Also what Andy Timmons used to use.
If you don't like the mid of the custom custom then I would stay away from alnico 2 because it has a mid hump. Alnico 5...
Thanks. The neck options were a hard choice. I do love rosewood with a tobacco burst, but the way Warmoth does neck binding is a bit too bold for my taste and I don't like having a different fretboard wood without binding. Still debating on the knobs to use. Right now I'm leaning toward silver...
Yes, it is very close to a JB with a 250k pot and some refining. It is also the closest option to the EVH's EBMM signature. I'm not concerned with a completely clean tone from the bridge. I will have the neck and both splits for that. Andy Timmons has one of my favorites tones for light breakup...
No doubt that the sound was secondary to the hum cancelling goal. However, I'm just talking about them being versatile. The EQ of the AT-1 is very different than a PAF.
Well, after more research I think I'm changing course again. Right now I'm thinking Dimarzio Bluesbucker in the neck and the AT-1 in the bridge, wired for coil splits. These are decidedly not PAFs, but they do seem to be more modern takes on what the PAF sound was trying to accomplish.
They expressly made them both to be used in either position. You identified the reasoning. Just a bit more brightness and to be closer in output to the neck. That said, I think I'm now leaning toward a Bluesbucker in the neck and the PAF 36 bridge in its normal position.
I've played off and on since about 10 years old. 30 now. I've been playing a Les Paul Special since the early/mid 2000s. Decided on a Semi-hollow VIP build in tobacco burst with roasted flame maple neck.
