I'm thinking about committing to a splurge. There is a custom acoustic luthier here that offers classes. Total out of pocket over about 45+ weeks is roughly $4200 and you learn the craft and end up with a custom acoustic. Your build. Its roughly 45 weeks long at 3 hr sessions each week. That...
Before I got the Dingwall, I used a custom set of string types and gauges for the 35". Heavy gauge hex core with the B. A light gauge round core for the G. it was my best attempt with keeping the B tight and the G workable.
I found with even 35” scale, the low B is not authoritative. To get that I went Dingwall, multi scale so the B gets 37 “. Also your g on a 35” starts to get strident. On the Dingwall it’s 33 “.
FYI. I do not have a drill press or a router. I do recall seeing years ago some sort of item (requires routing) is a wide solid plate to accommodate different spacings.
Trying to avoid filling holes, plugging, and redrilling for the string through
So on a non funded mission. I have some Goldfoil pups (humbucker size) I need a guitar for. I prefer a Tele. Pricing a build, I’m over 1500 (over 500 just for a finished body), so I’m opting for a Fender Chris Sheflitt Tele.
Used they’re going for 650.
Only thing, the bridge is a flat...
Owning a Doozy Starplayer TV (for a decade+), I can attest it is a true semi hollow. A back, top and sides glued together with a separate center block glued in. Is ala a 335, but it is smaller and the back is much more arched than a 335 or a Gretsch.
Oh and if ever you go down that rabbit hole...
Modern Ric 360s are routed from the back as well. That’s how they get the top round overs and why there’s binding only the rear. That’s where they seal it up.
It’s neither. It’s a heavily routed body with a top cap. It is not built with separate sides and back like a hollow (330) or a semi (335 hollow with a center block). Think modern Ric 360.
If anyone wants the equation to reading pickups already wired up, its:
The equation is (1/R actual) = (1/R measured) - (1/ R pot)
I also have a spreadsheet that will do this for you.
On multi-scale. Very problematic. So many variables. They are easy to play and offer multi scales. My Dingwall 5 is basically a 37" scale for the low B and a 33" scale for the high g.
