Have you tried the 16" radius? Warmoth does offer a 16" radius neck option. The difference between a 20" radius and a 16" radius is less than 1/64th of an inch at the heel of the neck.

Your right, he will probably destroy his frist few guitars and amps, but if Warmoth makes the parts then after he smashes one I could teach him how to fix it. That way if he doesn't have what it takes to make it on stage he could at least be somebodys guitar tech when he's older. He's only 8...

I saw on here someone suggesting counter sunk holes for the screws, so they would be flush with the wood. Would it be to much trouble to route a small recess for the neck plate? It would allow the use of the thicker cast neck plate and still give a smooth flush fit. Also I see what your saying...
