    Nuts!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I finally have the tuning stable without loss of tone.  I don't like the string trees but without them the strings are flat & tinny.  But I'm good now. :blob7: Unfortunately I had several guitar "techs" try to solve this and none of them have a clue.  I finally...

    Nuts!

The slot is a pre-molded "U" shape.  It's a good shape, perfect for 10s (which is all I play).  I haven't filed the main portion of the slot, just the downward side towards the tuners. Any special techniques for filing?  How do I figure out how "low" to file the back side (as opposed to depth...

    Nuts!

I've been struggling with a tuning problem on my China-a-Caster for a while.  I finally altered a Graph Tech Teflon/Tusq pre-slotted nut to fit properly & almost have the problem solved.  Without string trees I can keep the guitar in tune, I'm finally hopeful.  Unfortunately the tone of the D...

    multi-effects guitar

I think it's a little early for DSP processors embedded into the instrument, but it won't be long.  The evolution of the keyboard synthesizers didn't take long once the circuits were small enough & became commercially viable.  The technology certainly exists now, but the commercial viability...

    SG Fret Reach

I just bought an SG after searching for a dual HB double-cut guitar for 2 years.  Played lots of stuff.  Rejected most of it.  Wanted easy acess to the upper frets along with a dual HB design.  Lots of stuff out there, but very little of it appealed to me when I played it.  So after a long and...

HB for HSS Strat (already got singles)

Check out the SD P-Rails.  HB, P90, & SC tone all in a convenient HB package.  I have an HSS Strat & I'm going to replace the HB w/ the P-Rails.  Check out a YouTube demo from someone called lyongraulty (I think).  He's playing great slide guitar on a flat-top LP with P-Rails.  He has 3 demos...

    3x3 non-angled headstock designs

I've been experimenting with the string trees on my Strat headstock for a while.  I find that they matter.  The notes are clearer & sustain is longer with the trees.  Unfortunately they also impact the tuning stability.  I found the best compromise for my guitar are the GraphTech teflon...

    sustain balance

Thanks for the ideas.  I'm puzzling with ways to dampen the lower frequency strings.  Nylon or StringSaver saddle experiments I suppose.  Maybe just shrink tubing around the lower 3 strings at the bridge saddle. I'm playing 10 - 46s, just boring ol' nickel plated steel strings.  Same strings...

    sustain balance

HI,   I have a new Epi SG that I've been playing for a few weeks now & I'm becoming familiar with it's personality.  It plays very well but I'm trying to figure out the tone.  It has massive sustain on the lower frequency strings.  Too much I'm afraid.  The Low E (Std tuning) will sustain for...

    Best way to ground?

You want to be careful of ground loops.  The objective is to provide a single connection to the output jack "ground".  This is usually done by creating a "star" connection in the guitar.  There's usually a single ground connection from the jack to the Vol Pot case.  All ground connections within...

String ferrels on Hardtail Strat Q

Sorry, I assumed the holes were drilled for flush ferrels.  If not, then yep - you have a modification delima.  One choice is filling & redrilling the holes.  Not desireable, but possible.  There are tolerance issues here as well as set-up time/costs.  2nd is using a CNC machine to drill the...

    My action problem

By installing a new neck you've basically made a "new" guitar.  It will require a setup.  If you have the skills & tools to perform a setup & adjust the action great.  Go for it.  If not just take the guitar to a luthier & have a setup done.  Let him know you installed a new neck.  He'll check...

String ferrels on Hardtail Strat Q

Check the Stewart MacDonald website.  They offer ferrels that are flush.  They may, or may not, fit the Warmoth holes.  But it's worth a look if you prefer the recessed ferrels.  It's the only source for string ferrels I've found other than Warmoth.

    SG Vol & 3-Way Operation

Cool.  Nice suggestion.  I'll give the re-wiring a go. Thanks.  :blob7:

    SG Vol & 3-Way Operation

So I'm bummed.  I just bought a new SG with the traditional 2 HB, 2 Vol, 2 Tone, & 3-way switch.  Just like I wanted. :toothy12:  But I'm confused.  If I turn either Vol knob all the way down (Off), the 2nd Vol knob at say 1/2 Volume, & put the 3-way in the center position (both pick-ups...
