    Marshall bought chinese hedge fund

Marshall quality has been going down for years so I wouldn't worry about who owns them now. Try Blackstar or Orange instead if you want that sort of sound. Except they are made in China and I don't buy things Made in China... More expensive non-Chinese options are available!

Making Strat bridge pickup sound like a Tele...

I did no setup. Took the Wilkinson by GOTOH out of the box, mounted it held in place only by the through-body strings. No screws holding it down. And it still sounded a lot better!

    Stingray pickup position

Not exactly answering your question but my experience is below. Lace Alumitone bass pickups are stunningly good IMHO. They are available as Precision pickups, soap bar pickups and a very pretty chrome bar pickup. Different formats but they sound the same. I have a bass with the DiMarzio Model...

Making Strat bridge pickup sound like a Tele...

2025 January 30th: update. I installed a Filtertron neck pickup some time ago but was never really happy with the sound of the guitar. I compared it to the 30 year old cheap Chinese Tele copy that is my test-bed for faffing about with different parts. The Chinese Tele sounds better both...

    trying to reduce the weight

Not sure how much they weigh, but do have a look at Steinberger tuners. StewMac reckon the black ones are lightest at 0.5084lbs. Interesting, seems they are heavier then the Fender locking tuners! But they are very nice... As for the body, pretend you are in DEVO and saw off any wood not...

    Strings for fretless bass

Rotosound Tru Bass 88 Nylon tapewound. To quote Rotosound "Tru Bass strings may be the nearest you will ever get to a double bass tone from an electric bass". It is more or less true! Other tapewound strings are available.

Starcaster/ Mooncaster project doomed before it's started?

Kieran, how good are you with tools? Any good at DIY? Any good at faffing about with cars or motorcycles? If you have any practical skills at all building a guitar is not beyond you. If you don't know which end of a soldering iron gets hot or how to use a chisel just go and buy a ready built...

Who had bigger home Stereo speakers back in the day than these babys!?

BBC LS5/8 bi-amplified monitor speakers with active crossover. Only sold them because I downsized and even I thought they looked a bit big in my little house! They are collectors items so got a good price for them. Now I have Genelec active speakers with sub-woofer. Very nice.

    Anybody collect stamps?

1966 or 1967. Daevid Allen heads over to Paris to ask William Burroughs if he can use Soft Machine as the name for the band. Burroughs says yes and would he like to know Burroughs' philosophy the quick way or the long way? Allen replies long way = Burroughs wittering on for hours vs quick way =...

    I bought a Gallien-Krueger MB 115 200Watt bass combo

It is wonderful, everything I hoped it would be. Rode the Hardley-Ableson Road Glide 200 miles to the dealer so I could compare GK with Markbass and any other good stuff they had in stock. The GK won hands down. Delivered 2 days later for free.

    Anybody collect stamps?

If you are not familiar with Soft Machine the story of how Daevid Allen asked William Burroughs for permission to use the name is NOT suitable for this forum!

THE world authority is Stanley Gibbons. https://www.stanleygibbons.com/ if you can't find useful info there I don't know where you will! And to confirm how much Stanley Gibbons were known in our youth I offer this:- Stanley Stamps Gibbon Album by Soft Machine.

    Fun with fat necks

I visited a local guitar shop that has a Kramer DMZ1000 aluminium neck guitar for sale, just to try it out, see if it was any good... I am deeply impressed by it and might have to buy it! The neck is good and wide, the fretboard is very flat, possibly classical style dead flat. Everything I...
