Yea, I have 4 Marshall heads and 2 combos but still drank the Fender Tone Master Pro Kool-Aid last year. Great piece of gear and a simple to use/understand user interface. BUT, to paraphrase an old saying “buy land, ‘cause they ain’t making any more of it”; substitute old Marshall tube amp. This Chinese purchase of the controlling interest pushed me over the GAS edge last week, so this showed up Friday. A mint condition 1987 100W Silver Jubilee model 2555. Gonna recap the power supply caps and the 10uf caps.Ya....Marshall as we loved it is done, and has been for a long time.
In my view they are doomed, blinded by the same short-sightedness that killed once-photography-industry-titan Kodak. Marshall was late returning from their excursion and got left at the pier holding their snorkel and arm-floaties while the cruise liner that is digital modeling sailed off to new ports of adventure.
As tube amps become more of a niche market every year, Marshall has no other recourse but to flail around in a wild attempt to become a lifestyle brand. You can be sure this hedge group intends to wring every drop of money they can from the name as they usher it towards death.
I dunno, maybe they will survive as MTV has, aka related in name only, but hawking products that have virtually nothing to do with their origin.
Lots of options out there these days. If you want a tube amp, IMHO go for a boutique clone over anything else. It will last a long time and will be easy to repair.
I replaced some caps and did a mod to my tube amp. With care, information, and caution, fairly straight forward. (at least for point to point wiring) .For you!
Tube amp techs seem to be disappearing quickly.
I mean, I love my tube amps for sure, and have no plans to get rid of them. But as I see pretty much every major touring act converting to digital, tube manufacturing drying up, tube amp techs becoming hard to find, and tube amp sales on the steady decline and I just can't help but think the writing is on the wall.
I imagine tube amps will still be around for a long time to come. Even if all production ceased today there are still lots of them out there. But I figure they will be a niche thing just like high-end tube stereo equipment.
