Zero fret...

I don't like 'em. someone will have to make a good case for them to convert me, and I don't think anyone can do that

What You ppl think about zero fret as new option?

IT SUCKS!

On the other hand, I wont blame the messenger, only his message.  You're ok in my book Edin.

You generally only see zero frets on really cheap guitars because they're easy to make.  You also seem them on really expensive guitars because there are apparently some advantages to using one over a conventional nut, dont remember any off hand though.  I imagine a zero fret made of a really tough alloy would last a long time.  Imagine a compensating zero fret made of say titanium.  Also your open notes sound the same as your fretted ones with a zero fret.

open notes are always brighter than fretted ones as is. I don't think it's good to make em sound even brighter with metal nut material.

I didn't understand personally.

TY!~

The good about zero frets is that you get easy production with controlled string elevation.  A spacer goes behind the zero fret, and this can be made variable if desired.  Tone... I'm not sure just how much its effected.  In production, you also have nice breakaway for the strings, so they tend to be buzz free at "the nut".  Tuning woes, strings sticking in the slot, are gone.

The bad is - they wear out, get ruts and grooves fairly rapidly.  A really really hard zero fret - hard stainless, might be interesting, but for all these years, a regular string nut has done everyone pretty well.

Skuttlefunk, of Regenerate Guitar Works uses Warmoth parts and adds a zero fret on some.
