I did some quick research and found they are still being made, some with necks that fold (backwards and forwards), and there are number of players around the world doing what theorbo players do.

Looks like they run as much as $6K. Considering every one is probably unique and takes a million years to make, that's probably not a bad price. Cheaper than some guitars I could mention.
