Wudtone Body Finishing Kit...

Somewhere along the line, whilst reading miscellaneous threads, I came across the name of a finishing product called Wudtone. After some looking and reading I discovered that the company is from the UK, but has a distributor in the US. Looking around the site, I found the color of my dreams: Amaranthine. A beautiful, deep, purple hue. I'm in love, I NEED an Amaranthine guitar!

Great, I can order it, but there is precious little information regarding how it is applied other than to say it's not a spray. I'm hoping someone reads this who has some experience with Wudtone finishes, and can maybe answer some questions.

Is it applied like an oil finish, (Watco like)? If so, can you wet sand with it to seal the open grain, (like Watco on Walnut)? Can it be used over a grain sealer, or is it specifically made to be used on open grain?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Damn, I just came to me where I saw a Wudton finished guitar: Vallhagen's beautiful "Cherry Flamenco" Strat in the Guitar of the month contest. Love the nice, deep color.

If you do a search on YouTube there's a video from the Australian distributor showing how it's applied.

There are a couple of folks on the forum that have used it.

Right here sir!

I actually dont remember how i came across Wudtone in the first place, but you know... browsing the web (forums, youtube, shops) somehow got me into it. I chose it for my first build(s) for a few reasons; the main one is that i could do the job at home - on my kitchen table. And also, it seemed fairly foolproof. All you need is time - it requires many layers, and i think it took more than a month from start to finnish.

The tools needed is just (dry) sandpaper, 0000 polishing steel wool, pieces of cloth, safety gloves and a place to be. No wetsanding, no grain filling. Basically you just rub in the color/top coats with a piece of rag, let it dry overnite, wipe it with some steel wool, and apply the next layer. Over and over. There is a good instruction paper included with the shipment.

To follow stratamanias hint; it seems like pitbullguitars in australia is the webs main place for info regarding Wudtone. There are indeed some useful youtube clips showing how to apply it.

There is also a chart out there, telling which finnish works best on which wood.

From personnal experience i find Andy @ wudtone to be a helpful guy, i had a few questions along the way and his response was quick and friendly.

One specific hint: when you put on the very first layer, dont hold back, be generous! Work it in, til the wood just dont want more.

Cheers
Bengt

And thank you Vallhagen, most helpful information. I'll check out pitbullguitars later today. From your description, it sounds like it applies like an oil finish, but with a dye, which is what I was researching, (Watco compatible coloring). Thanks again, and beautiful Tele.
