Would warmoth do a buckeye burl top?

If I supply the top, would they make a strat body with the buckeye burl? Or do they not work with burl? Would they make a guitar with a supplied quilt top?

I know they've used customer-supplied woods in the past. Whether they still will isn't something I can answer. You'd have to call. However, I can say it's probably a pretty safe bet that even if they do, they wouldn't want to work with a burl. It tends to break and/or fall apart when cut into thinner pieces, or if you try to bend it. I think it's because it's all end grain, so there's very little holding it together.

They used to offer a Camphor Burl top, but I don't see that in the builder any more. Story I got is the one I have is one of the last ones they did, due to high failure rates in production. Was originally built for another member here, Docnrock, who sold it to me...

If you keep an eye on the Unique Choice section, you might just see some Camphor Burl appear soon.  :o

Where exactly is the "Unique Choice section"? ???

In the builder. After choosing the core wood and a lam top, there is a page called 'would you like to choose your actual laminate top'. It offers different wood choices than the first page. For example, there was a wood choice called 'Shedua' in there right now. You will probably encounter the 'Camphor Burl' selection there 'soon'. But probably not for long - those are one off pieces and there are some manical idiots very motivated forum members watching for such things to appear.

I'm guessing the "unique choice" in the body builder where you get to pick the actual piece of wood your top is.

There's a burl LP in the showcase right now.

Oh, that ”Unique choice section”! I was thinking about showcase bodies and thought there was a section there that I’d completely missed.

You can also access the Unique Choice inventory from any of the "catalog" pages. From the brown bar across the top of any page, eg Guitar Bodies>Models>Standard Stratocaster and if you scroll down you can select a lam top or fingerboard (depending on if you are on a body or neck page) and see a full screen picture of the wood choice without a rendering in the builder. Only available woods have categories.  :icon_thumright:

Oh, I have one bit of information to add.  If you are proposing to Warmoth to use a customer supplied piece, they will only work with kiln dried.  I've called them about just this specific question previously.  Most of the potential tops I found and were interested in were not.  I've since dropped the quest.

I would give my left teste to have a mooncaster bass in burl.  (Hint: Aaron?)

All I can say is keep your eyes on the Showcase, but go ahead and keep that left teste, you might need it someday  :dontknow:

Thank you, will do.  That left teste has probably seen it's more useful days, which is why I would be willing to trade it for a burl top.  But, I can understand not actually wanting it as payment.  Ew.

A buckeye burl top strat is my dream guitar someday. From what I understand though buckeye burl involves applying stuff to get it to smooth over holes and imperfections and then sanding. If true that may be more than Warmoth is willing to do. I talked to USACG a couple years back and they agreed buckeye burl was stunning but nobody wanted to do all the hand work for a top.

Don't throw my name around like that's a trade I'd be interested in making.  :laughing7:

If anyone has a hankerin' for a burl top, might want to check out the UC section and get them while they're hot. Only 4 beauties looking for a loving home.  :turtle:
