I actually really liked STP's cover of Dancing Days.

Yeah you have to do the song right. I grew up playing a lot of GNR but if you can't sing it, don't. We wound up playing It's So Easy which was a lot more manageable than all of that high-pitched stuff. Led Zep & AC/ADC are perfect examples. If the singer can't do it, neither can you.

I agree you have to do justice to a song, but I don't think a cover needs to be an exact representation of the original. It's not karaoke. A truly good cover is a song that an artist has adapted and made their own. If you're just going to try and copy, note for note, a song ... like I said, go to a karaoke bar.

The Blind Boys of Alabama's version of Tom Waits' "Way Down in the Hole" is a great example of making someone else's song their own. Both are great, but each are their own songs. The Waits version is "great" for its ingredients, which the Blind Boys took and made a song that is "great" in every regard. I think the cover is better than the original.
