Well it looks like I ll get to scratch that guitar building itch after all. A buddy of mine played both my guitars today and was so impressed he has commissioned me to build and paint a guitar for him. He doesn't want anything super fancy or pricey, he just wants a nice looking custom built and painted guitar that he can shred on. All he really specified was something in the S-H configuration, it will probably be a poplar strat with maple neck. I ll paint the body black with a black one ply pickguard and paint the whole thing up with some really killer scenery to match its metal sensibilities. For pickups I was thinking SD quarter pound for strat and an SD Distortion in the bridge. I ll post pics as I get parts!

+1 There's not enough nice Soloists around here, Strats are thirteen to a dozen. I like Strats okay but they really get lost in the mix I think.

Shredderific...

+1 to this entire statement.

hmmm a soloist might be doable. He didn't seem too set on a Strat, just wanted something inexpensive with nice artwork and that would sound good with distortion. With the Soloist (and lack of a pickguard) I would have more workspace on the front of the guitar for artwork...

More to the point, if he's a shredder, then he'd have better upper fret access and more of them with a 24 fret neck.

i wish warmoth could do an angled singlecoil in the neck or middle positions. now THAT would be awesome. i had a charvette (charvel's squier) and it had an angled single in the neck. nothing cooler.

+1 more to the soloist. Tho if he's into metal maybe basswood would trump poplar since they're both cheapo and basswood has a history with heavy music

Im thinking the soloist might be the way I go now, unfortunately the project is on hold now due to some strange noises coming from his car lol

I thought basswood + tremolos doesn't work out so well?

i'm guessing that's because of the softness off the wood and the trem screws ripping out or something? I've never actually heard anything like that. Plenty of high end guitars made of basswood have trems. John Petrucci played one for years, and that was a pretty great guitar

Me either, the EBMM EVH sig's are basswood to with floyds. But Floyds haven't used trem screws in years. They use insert studs now...But probably a different story with a strat style trem tho.... :dontknow:

my strat is basswood with 9 hole strat trem, its not been a problem yet but I dont really whammy on it ever, i bend from the strings. The biggest issue with basswood is that its so dang light, my canary neck feels like it weighs a ton on that thing. Anyway this guitar will be a hardtail, Floyd would be pricey and he didn't really want a tremolo.
