Helping out a friend. He asked this in a Facebook group. I don't trust the yahoos in FB groups, so I thought I'd help him out by asking here.

Here's what he wrote:

Hello everyone...
Hoping you folks can help me..
I’m wiring a firebird copy with 3 p90's
I want each pickup to have it's own volume pot and a master tone pot, and a Fender style 5 way switch..
If anyone has a wiring diagram for this setup I would greatly appreciate it...
Thank you...

I also asked ChatGPT just to see what it would say (and forwarded it to my friend).
Here's what it spit out: https://chatgpt.com/share/67b38560-43c8-8003-8a16-d015c16c6b51
He says it looks good but still wants a wiring diagram.

Stratamania, you've always been a HUGE help to me in the past. Would you happen to know what the diagram should consist of?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What ChatGPT has explained seems about right to me. At the end, it asks if you want a diagram, can you not get it to generate that for you?

If you want to make a diagram, draw:
  • 3 pickups with a + and - wire each
  • A selector switch
  • Four pots
  • An output jack
  • Follow the explanation and draw the wires as described.

The diagram it made was completely off - it showed a picture of a guitar surrounded by 8 humbuckers and way too many wires coming out of each one.

About all of the big pickup manufacturers have wiring diagrams online, if they don't have what you need google 'guitar electronics' and you should get lots of responses.

3 mini DPDT ( on/off ) will get you more control - allowing every possible combination of the 3 pups - including all 3 at the same time.

I am also a fan of 3 switches. but in case you have to have a diagram, you can easily make your own.

Look up single volume 1 pickup diagrams but instead of going to the jack you go to the switch.

Then the tone is just wired to the common output from the switch instead of to one of the volume pots.

If you cant get it from there, I could probably slap something together for you.

It would work, but be aware that rolling down one pickup entirely will kill all signal to the other currently selected pickups. Instead, you could wire to the wiper lug for independent volumes.
